Can I Push For More Tests? Should I?

(Firstly, I'm in the U.K)

Have had a mid-way appointment with my consultant today. A bit disappointed as it was meant to be a talk about what the next steps are for us. It's a 3 hours round trip for us, and was a 3 minute conversation.

He told me to carry on with the rest of my clomid prescription (another three months supply), and that he isn't going to request anymore tests until I've finished them because I'm ovulating and he doesn't believe there's any need.

I would really like further tests, as obviously it's pointless taking the clomid (as lovely as it is to have normal cycles again) and a waste of precious time if there is something else wrong.

The pain I got before starting clomid was horrendous and constant (still there now, but nowhere near as bad while taking the tablets for some reason), and there's no way that's normal.

Can I push for more tests, or should I wait it out? I'd rather get them done sooner rather than later. If so, do I ring and talk to the receptionist about it, or get another appointment with my consultant, or even my GP?

The next step he described is a lap + dye I believe, but the nurse last time said it would be a HSG. What is the difference and what should I be asking for?

I hope someone can help and offer some advice. Thank you xx

I would insist (if I were you) on a HSG, your ovaries may be working but that does not mean there are no issues with your fallopian tubes. Also has your partner got a semen analysis done? How long have you been trying?

He's had all tests before we were referred. We've been trying for about a year now. The only tests I've had are blood tests and scans to check for PCOS.

I'd ask for the HSG too. I was automatically put forward for it after the blood tests showed I was ovulating (God what a pain in the ass they were!). I don't know what the diff between a "lap and dye" and a HSG are... could it be the same thing?

If you want to (ha - who WANTS to! I mean if you need to and feel that it's right for you) go on to IVF you'll have had to had the HSG first before your consultant will refer you I would think. How long have you been on the clomid? Your dr might want to give it a while to work because your chances of conceiving are, what, one in three (?) each cycle, even with everything working. I'd reckon your dr would want to give it 6, maybe 9 months so that you've had 6-9, chances.

In my health board, you have to have been trying for 3 years before they'll put you fwd for IVF, although the wait after that wasn't long, I was seen within 3 months I think.

I had the HSG, although I can't remember whether I had before starting Clomid or whilst I was taking it. I was given Clomid for 12 months to begin with, although I've read of people saying their doctors only prescribe it for 6 months tops. My HSG showed that my tubes were clear and I ovulated on the lowest dose of Clomid but still failed to fall pregnant. I only took it for 10 months in the end as I was having some pretty nasty side effects and my consultant thought the best course of action was to move forward with IVF.

Aside from the HSG, I don't think there's any other tests they would do, in addition to what they've already done, so I'd definitely ask them about checking your tubes. Like you say, it's pointless making you ovulate if there was some kind of blockage/issue with your tubes.

Yes as the other ladies say, push for the HSG just to make sure your tubes are ok. If all is fine, maybe continue the clomid as prescribed. It's good your DH has been tested.

Def push for more testd, I had a doc do tests, say I was fine then stuck me on clomid saying he sure this is the answer. Two yrs was waisted, went to another re who said this guy waisted my time, if I gone to this re, I would have had the time wasted. He did more tests, blood, sono hsg and redid oh SA. Turned out I have alot of stuff wrong and if caught at 39 apposed now to mid 40's I probably would be pregnant. Right now im back on clomid taking a bread from injectables...so its very important to get the right tests
