Can I use a carry cot in the car instead of a car seat?

I've got a carry cot with my push chair instead of a car seat as I went for comfort for long walking trips. Does anyone know if it's still safe and legal to use it in the car instead of a car seat? I know they were used a few years ago but the safety regulations have changed lots. I have enquired to get a harness fitted but not sure if that's enough. My car is a bit small to put a car seat, carry cot and push chair in!

i dont think so, britax do a lie falt car seat called babysafe sleeper

I really dont think its allowed hun. I know that in my hospital when u are taking baby home, the nurses demand to see the car seat that u are putting LO in to make sure that it meets all the regulations.
I have a pretty small car and I went for the Mothercare Spin. Its got quite a dinky car seat and then the pram is a carry cot which turns into a push chair, and its all very small and compact to store.

There are alot of car seats about that are small and easily portable and dont have to cost u alot of money. But ud rather be safe than sorry x

I wouldn't say so...it's not as safe, and the hospital wont let you take baby home unless there's a car seat that passes rules and regulations.

There are a few makes that do carrycots which are also car seats- they are strapped into the car by seat belts and fit sideways on the back seat. Think the 'Jane' brand do them x

As others have said I am fairly sure it's not legal and that you wouldn't be allowed to take baby home in it.

Out of interest, which pram did you go for? Mine lies flat in a carrycot style, converts into a pushchair for later and also has a car seat.

I have a mother care polka dot one, it came with separate carry cot and push chair seat, but can also put car seat on frame.

It might be worth calling customer services and asking if you can use the carrycot as a car seat but I would say you'll probably need to get the car seat.

There are only a very few carrycots on the market that are legal to be used as carseats. With my son, we chose his travel system specifically so that we could use the carrycot in the car. As far as I know, the only ones allowed are the Jane Auto Carrycot Pro (which is what we had), the Bebe Confort Windoo Carrycot and the Mamas & Papas Autocruise Car Carrycot. Even if you had an approved carrycot, you'd need to get a proper carseat anyway after a few months.
