I have read conflicting info on this. Can play and movement with your baby cause shaken baby syndrome? Or even just minor brain damage?

DH sometimes does "elevator" with LO. This is where he raises baby up high and drops him down quickly (LO does not leave his hands). LO loves it and laughs like crazy.

We do a music class for babies and the teacher has us bouncing them, dancing with them, jiggling them.

We also do a babywearing dance class that involves a lot of motion.

LO is 4 months and has good head control. I don't know why, but I have suddenly become concerned that these activities could be doing some harm to LO's brain.

I would know if these things were causing some kind of harm, right? There have been no signs. Am I just being an over-concerned mommy?

I understand your concern. I don't have any absolute facts for you....just that people have been bouncing, playing, dancing, etc. with their babies for years with no major reports of problems (that I've ever heard). I think if it were a real problem, it'd be better known. :flower:

What research have you read?

Google... Every anxious mom's worst enemy. :haha:

You need to shake your baby with some force to cause any damage.

I haven't read anything about this but I would say no. My dh used to do the same thing with ds1 when he could confidently hold his head up and ds1 is sharp as a whip, he's 2.5 now. I think significantly forceful back and forth motions need to occur to incur damage.

Iv read this is 100% not possible the amount of force youd have to shake a baby with to give the brain damage is no where near close to the amount you use during play my daughters 15 months she loves gettings spun around hung upside down and thrown on the bed ect sometimes her head jolts but then again im one of the rare mums that doesnt really worry about anything!

I've wondered this too! Makes me sick to think of the actual force that's used to hurt a baby :( my son loves a bit of 'rough' play and he is fine. I would never do anything I thought would hurt him x

I used to worry about this too!.. Had a major panic about the Jumperoo when we first got it as he jumped about like a wee madman in it (still does!) and sometimes quite violently! I've been reassured it's fine and so far so good. My dad also does the elevator game with little one! Xxx

Also if it was hurting them in anyway they wouldn't be enjoying it youd definitely be able to tell if you were hurting them lots of babys love rough play my daughters loves being scared ect ha shes a tomboy

Shaken baby is caused by a massive amount of force.

A baby that has been shaken has injuries similar to that of a serious car accident, you cant do that through play.

Oh yes! My sister is a pediatric intensive care nurse and officially forbid me from googling anymore during my pregnancy!!:haha:

I also had a fear of this when my son was younger but I do believe it takes a lot of force to cause any damage.
