Hi, just wondering if anyone has had to have the catheter in before the spinal and how much did it hurt?
Apparently here they put it in before taking you to the operating room to get spinal etc and I'm dreading it as can imagine it hurting!

Its uncomfortable but its not too bad. :)

I had one. Don't remember the pain as was in shock at the time. However I found it fine to have in as didn't need to go up to toilet. Plus there was zero pain having it removed.

Aw man, why won't they put it in after the spinal when you're numb?? That's just mean, it takes literally 30 seconds from set up of the equipment to you being attached to the bag.

I've never had one and been able to feel it, but I catheterize people all the time at my job and they describe it as uncomfortable and weird, not necessarily painful. It does help if if you're relaxed, so try not to worry :)

I agree --it was very uncomfortable, but not painful. For me, the actual cathing wasn't so bad, it was laying there able to feel it until they gave me the spinal and I was numb. But again, just discomfort, not pain. I think it will be a bit easier this time because I will know what to expect lol. Don't worry too much--it isn't really so bad. : ) I didn't feel a thing during removal.

I had started to go numb when they put mine in so dont know if I felt or not. Having it in is an inconvenience more than anything. Having it taken out isnt painful, like having a smear done when they take the speculum out. Lol. xx

I don't remember feeling much with either of mine. A jolt of "hey, something just happened down there" and that was about it.

I think they have to cath you before the epidural so you don't pee yourself (or on them) before it's in. It's not like you can feel if your bladder is full or not after the epidural!

They inserted mine within seconds of me going numb :)

But yeah, if they had waited they might have had to clean up my pee because they were pumping me full of fluids pre-op lol

No idea apparantly that's just how they do it in Germany! Last time I gave birth I was in the uk and got it put in after epidural but it was an emergency cesarean.

Aww that's not fair! Both times mine have been done after the spinal started to work.

its kind of uncomfortable hun but should be painful (unless they do it wrong or have to keep doing it.. which they shouldnt!) xx
