what does it mean to have ur cervix nicely thinned and low but not dilated atall yet? cand u still go into labour and then dilate during ur contractions etc??

You usually start to thin prior to dilation. Have sex and bounce on your ball! Try evening primrose tabs if you want! Good luck!

haha i wud if i cud but aint got a ball or primrose and im single :(
just wondered if labour can still start if dilation hasnt

Yes - in fact, dilation is the result of 'labor'... its just deemed 'pre' labor until you hit 5cm. But 'pre-labor' can be as long as several weeks for some ladies, but can be just a few hours for others. It seems like the difference between 'pre' labor and 'established active' labor is about 5cm mark.

My doctor said the contractions cause you to dilate - but thinning happens first. I'm frustrated right there with you - almost 39 weeks and barely 50% thinned - not dilated - pretty high cervix... :( It'll all turn out for the best - try not to worry. Have you talked to your doctor?

I'm in the same boat, I'm 75% effaced, head is down really low completly engaged, but really not dilated (was told I was 2 cm at 36 weeks, but now today he said I'm barely dilated at all which I don't understand).

well midwife yesterday gave me a stretch n sweep but said my cervix is nicely low and thinned and she cud feel babys head so his really low n it shocked her how low he was.. but she said i hadnt started to dfilate so wasnt in labour.. just curious of if u need to dilate a lil to start labour or for ur waters etc to break or if it all can come at once after contractions start

How strange I'm the other way round! Cervix hasn't started to thin and babys head is still high up - not engaged at all yet I'm 3cm dilated!
I think everyone is different so much can happen during labour with no symptoms before so I wouldn't worry. After having 2 unsuccessful sweeps so far I'm starting to realise it'll only happen when its ready or as the old nurse at the hospital said apple will only fall when its ripe lol!
