After going 8 days overdue, I went to see the midwife at 2pm on the 16th to book induction and check on baby. I was suffering with sciatica and a few cramps but no signs of labour being imminent. At 3pm I picked hubby up in the car from outside the cinema and we went to Tesco. 2 hours wandering around Tesco with the children and I started to get some crampy pains which I mentioned to hubby, but I wasn't sure so we carried on with our evening. Put the kids to bed as normal at 7ish and settled down to eat our dinner and watch a batman movie
About 8/9pm I registered that they were regular (about 5 mins apart) and reasonably painful but not enough to stop me eating or watching the movie. After the movie (about 10.30) hubby ran me a bath, and I hopped in. Normally this would have stopped the contractions but they kept coming, although they did slow down a bit. After the bath, they popped right back up at 5 mins apart but the intensity was pretty high. About midnight hubby was getting concerned but we went to bed and tried to rest. About 12.30am hubby rang L&D to get some advice as they weren't getting closer together but I was having to really breathe heavily through them with some wailing involved. The MW asked him to bring me in immediately. Hubby quickly rang his Mum to get her to come and watch the children, knocked on next door (thankfully it was a Friday so our neighbour was awake) and asked her to watch them while MIL came up to get them, and between the contractions we got me and my bag into the car.
We arrived at the hospital at about 1.30am and while the contractions were still about 3-4 minutes apart, and I was able to hold a conversation around them, when they came they were up on the scale and I immediately asked for the gas. As MLBU was full, I was admitted to delivery suite and handed a gas dispenser.....bliss! I get my paperwork done between the contractions and my very nice midwife named Anna, bustled around setting everything up. She didn't even examine me as she could see I was progressing.
Very quickly it was obvious to us all that I was going to give birth very soon. The baby did a huge wriggle and I felt all the weight shift to the front of the bump - excellent, no back to back labour for me. She checked HB and things and all was well. As I contracted I could actually see my bump disappearing and I could feel baby descending which I kept saying was weird. Even with pain up on the 8s and 9s I was still chatting between the contractions. Suddenly the pain shifted into my pelvis and every contraction was like hot pokers in my hips and thighs......this went on for about 6-8 contractions (gaps between were quite large although I'm assured it was still only 2-3 minutes lol) and my hubby and the MW were telling me that the only way to get that pain to stop was to get baby out.
With this I got mad....I realised I had to push this baby out. No easy ride this time lol. I get really mad and just started to push. First proper push my waters went with an almighty POP all over my poor midwife! I went with the contractions, but it still took what felt like an eternity (15 minutes according to my notes lol) to push baby out. Baby felt huge, but it only took about 3 pushes to get to crowning and then another 2 and a lot of panting to birth his head and shoulders.
Charles Jerome arrived at exactly 4am, weighing 8lb10oz and was perfect.
As per usual for me my bleeding was very 'efficient' and the midwives as per were a bit worried about me. I assured them it was normal for me and sure enough, after 6 hours I was discharged. Charles failed his baby checks due to a slight problem with his heart valves not closing, so we were kept in overnight. His checks were repeated this morning, the murmur was gone and we were allowed home at 10.30am today
