This is awfully late as my little gal is already just over 3 weeks old, but better late than never
sorry it's so long!
Tuesday 17th December, 2013 (40+5):
I was booked to have an internal exam and a stretch and sweep at 1:30pm this day. The previous two days I had lost so much of my mucus plug! I remember thinking to myself "I must be dialating!" And getting quite excited. I arrived at the hospital for my appointment with my OH. I was seen by the doctor who was to perform the internal and a midwife that was assisting him (and also holding my hand
) I can honestly say I was not expecting what came next! The doctor turned to the midwife and said "this lady is in labour. She's 5cm with bulging membranes and I'm feeling her contractions" this shocked me. I couldn't feel any contractions!! He admitted me onto maternity ward that minute! So up to the maternity ward we went. I presented at the desk and the doctor in charge looked at me skeptically and said "yeah we'll hook you up to the monitor but you look fine" so I was hooked up to the machine thingy for about an hour as babies heart rate dropped occasionally. My contractions were regular and watching the machine I realised that I could feel them but they felt like the braxton hicks I'd been having my whole pregnancy. My notes were checked over again as everyone was commenting on how small I was for an overdue baby. Doctor was annoyed percentiles hadn't been recorded from ultrasounds, but my fundal height was 5 weeks behind.
Got moved into a room on the ward and my OH sat and watched TV and bounced on a birthing ball til 7pm, when my contractions became slightly uncomfortable, just like period pains. So I buzzed the midwife and asked her for some panadol. She said she wanted to check me again because she believes I have a high pain threshold. I agreed. She checked me and I was 7-8cm. She couldn't believe it! Neither could I really. So she took me straight over to a delivery suite, where I continued to bounce on my ball. They wanted to hook me up to the contraction machine again. Another doctor came in and had a feel of my stomach and said she couldn't feel a head, so they wheeled in the portable ultrasound machine to check and make sure she wasn't breech. I didn't have much fluid at all. She was head down, just very far toward my back and back to back. So I got to see my baby on screen hours before I met her
once they finished that and took me off the contraction machine I got off the bed (I hated being on it!) I bounced on the ball for a bit and I started getting awful back labour. So I went in the shower with my ball and had my OH direct hot water into my lower back. My god it was amazing!! At this point I tried the gas but didn't like it. It made me feel drunk and woozy and I didn't want to be feeling that way as I wanted to keep active. So pushed that aside and continued with the bouncing and hot water, midwife said we're just waiting for my waters to go. My contractions began to get more and more painful in my back, I didn't feel them round front at all.
Wednesday 18th December:
I began to get very very exhausted and my OH told me to ask for some kind of pain relief. I asked the midwife and she said she didn't want to give it to me as I was coping so well (which I was thankful for, I didn't want pain relief.. I spent most of my labour telling my OH to stop telling me to get drugs! Only asked to shut him up) and asked to check me again, so I agreed. At about 1am she said I was 9-10cm and offered to break my waters instead, which I consented to. There wasn't much fluid at all. I began involuntarily pushing pretty much straight away. Honestly was an awful feeling and I hated not having control over my body like that!! This went on for roughly half an hour when I began to push with my contractions consciously. At first I was pushing on my side, then on my back, then kneeling over the bed, then my midwife had me sit on the toilet and push (apparently the best position for it, but I was scared I was going to have her into the toilet the whole time! Must say it felt best pushing here though) then she moved me back onto the end and put my legs in those stirrup thingys and told me my pushing was having the most success this way. I pushed and pushed and pushed and she was just not moving any further. At my hospital they let FTM's push for 2 hours before intervening. I pushed for the full 2 hours. My midwife brought a doctor in and she said she'd have to do an episiotomy. My OH said she cut me 3 times. After the cut she was out about 10 minutes later, a perfectly healthy and NORMAL 7lb6oz, everyone was shocked at her size as I was so ssmall! The doctor I had was awful. The locals she gave me to stitch me up didn't work on one side of me and I could feel all the pain of her stitching me and I was screaming at her but she just told me to breathe the gas and air and had people hold my legs down. It was honestly quite traumatic. My baby girl was a natural at breast feeding, latched perfectly on her own after finding my breast herself. I giggled when they put her on my chest, I was just in shock, and so so in love. My beautiful Charlotte Lilyana Rose was born at 3:28am on the 18th of December, after 2 hours and 28 minutes of pushing, an episiotomy and a couple of grazes.![Cloud 9 :cloud9: :cloud9:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/cloud9.gif)
