I use them and they're fine... no need for expensive ones. Once you get your positive (and heres_hoping is right - you can often get very nearly positives that aren't quite there yet) you will likely ovulate within 36 hours. It's usually the next day, but everyone's different... and you could be at the beginning, middle, or end of your surge when you get your positive. Also it is worth bearing in mind that a positive OPK does not guarantee that you will ovulate - it just tells you that your LH surge has been detected, which is what triggers ovulation. You can get this and not ovulate. If you've been trying a while and haven't already, then you should see your doctor about the Day21 blood test which can confirm you are ovulating.
P.S, the cheaper pregnancy tests tend to be more sensitive, so maybe the cheaper OPKs are too, which could explain why you have had more near positives than you did with first response. Don't know, just a guess. If you find you get on better with first response then go with those.
