I got the Mirena fitted back in June. TBH it was a horrid experience  I still can't really think about it all for long without getting a bit of anxiety over it... thankfully no issues since it was placed or anything- but the thought of checking for the string (as they recommend every so often) is NOT a happy thought.

I figure, I go in for a yearly exam anyway... so couldn't they just check? It was fitted with an ultrasound- so I didn't need to do the followup.

I feel like a total baby about it- but my situation was very unique and NOT at all common... even just thinking of going in for my pap makes me nervous now! I've had them since I was 18- they aren't that big of a deal (not pleasant- but over quickly). :dohh:

The reason why you should check your string every month or after every cycle, is because if the iud moved and is not in the correct position it could compromise the ability to work as reliable birth control. I implore you to get an appt w a knowledgable provider and ask how to check strings and get tips to ease it. It is necessary to ensure no pregnancy.

Do you mean checking yourself? It only takes a few seconds and as guppy says is inportant. Once you've done it a few times itll be much better it probably seems worse in the anticipation

Thanks ladies... I get why I *should* do it. I have an appt soon with my OB anyway- so at least she'll confirm it's still Ok soon enough. Eventually I'll get over it.
