Cloth nappies, what kind should I choose?

Ok. I confess. I'm already thinking about nappies. Actually, we want to spread the costs over the next six months and we plan to buy our nappies early on. I'm pretty much decided on cloth, as I'm "one of those" environmental freaks! :flower:

I'm a bit lost, though. I've understood there were different sorts and I don't know what's best for me! Belgian maternity leave is ridiculously short so my dear baby will be in daycare from 3-4 months old. It's a very progressive daycare and they already told me they were ok with cloth. But it means I need something easy and simple, that will not put them off, nor the daddy/MIL/occasional babysitter.

What kind of nappies should I go for?

I think best for daycare and baby sitters will be All in ones or pockets that you have stuffed waiting for them. I think for newborn stage I would really get a bunch of prefolds and then a few pockets and such in extra small because they will probably outgrow the newborn sizes really quickly, before you are back to work. Then stock up alot on the size smalls. I would recommend Fuzzi Bunz small, they probably wont fit from birth but soon after and will last a long time, my 22mo old still wears their smalls and has for a long time. Then Bumgenius organic aio are great, they are very trim, i like their snap ones best. They will fit a very small baby but are one size so should fit through potty training. bumgenius pockets are pretty good too, we used them for overnights for months but we started having stink issues which I've found is pretty common with those diapers, but they were great for months, they are also one size but I don't think they are as trim as the aio. greenmountaindiapers.com is great for prefolds

I recommend trying a few before you buy loads because I've found that different nappies fit differently. The nappylady site lets you do a free questionnaire thing that asks you a load of questions then recommends different nappies depending on your answers (things like do you have a tumble drier)

Yea if i was you i'd get a few of the starter packs from different places and order the ones you want once your baby has arrived or once you've seen them. I just bought loads and they ended up not suiting us and now we have tons of nappies that were pretty much un used :(

well were is i start i have tot bots, motherease, coolababy pockets, prefolds, onelife, kooshies, I really like my kooshies and my coolababies and i am planning to buy some bumgenius next months

I love my bumgenius, Itti Bitt Dlish and Blueberrys! They have not leaked on me yet and they are pretty much the same design as a disposable nappy so once you have stuffed them (if needed) anybody can figure them out!x

Thanks everyone! I will follow you radvice and try npt tp preder too much before knowing what's best for us. How many nappies do I need for a start? We have a washing machine and tumble dryer at home.

Just a suggestion but you might consider using disposables for the first couple of weeks - I know I'd have hated having to do extra washing then and it's time taken away from your baby if there's no one else to wash them!! I know there are people who do use cloth from birth and it's loads better for the environment etc but I don't think I'd have wanted those first poos on my lovely cloth nappies anyway :D

Thanks elm for this suggestion. I thought about using them for the first few days but may just stretch it out for longer now! :flower:

If you're in the uk there's loads of deals you can take advantage of for newborn nappies - like the Boots changing bag so you can take advantage of them, get all the free stuff and never get them ever again :D x

I used to disposables to begin with also, i think in the beginning they are easier also IMO takes a while to find the kind you like and they look sooo huge on your ickle baby.

You can get biodegradable disposables that are better for the environment than plastic ones. I'd use those for the first few days at least, you don't want to have to wash meconium out of your cloth ones!

Definitely go for pockets or all in ones for day care. Prefolds are great on a little one as they are more trim. Mothercare Smart Nappies are great.
