We recently started using coconut oil on DD's bottom and it seems to be the only thing that helps the teething related nappy rashes she gets, apart from steroid cream which obviously I don't want to use unless I absolutely have to.

We have a pot of the cheeky wipes coconut oil at home but that's not really practical for when she's at the childminder...I wondered if anyone knew of a coconut oil based nappy cream, or indeed pure coconut oil, that comes in a tube? I'm in the UK. Thanks :)

I put mine in a tiny pot if that helps? (like eyeshadow size!) i think because it starts off in its hard form it needs to be more accessible through a jar rather than a tube

Coconut oil is generally a solid at room temperature, so it would be impossible to have in a tube (at least if it's pure). You'll most often find it in a tub. If that works, I would be inclined to just buy some pure coconut oil and then decant it into a small container to send with him. If you are concerned about lots of fingers in it (which might breed some bacteria), just give her some gloves to wear when she uses it to make sure it stays clean. You can also mix up your own creams at home really easily. I make my own hand lotions that are coconut oil based. There are loads of recipes out there, but I use a mix of sweet almond oil, beeswax and coconut oil with some essential oils (for nappy cream, I'd probably add some chamomile). Melt together in a bowl over a water bath on the stove and add to a container (glass or metal) to cool. They are great. So much cheaper than buying anything at the store and much nicer. With the addition of other ingredients, they're also a little less solid at room temp, though still probably not soft enough to go in a tube. If you haven't tried Weleda yet, they do make a really nice nappy cream too. It does come in a tube, though isn't coconut oil based.

I just use a small jar and send with ds. So far we've had no trouble. I do try to change out the coconut oil often to avoid any contamination.

We use coconut oil too, personally I'd just decant some into a smaller tub and send that with little one :)

Thanks ladies, I'll see how the cm feels they'll cope with it...we're their token weirdos, we've introduced them to expressed breastmilk, BLW, cloth wipes, munchkin 360 cups, and ERF car seats :haha: I got a weird look when I mentioned coconut oil as bum cream the other day.

I'm a bit surprised that there doesn't seem to be a tube version available...I mean, lanolin is pretty much solid at room temperature, and you can still get that in a tube. I might have a play with making my own concoction (at some point, I barely have time to cut my own fingernails these days...). I left our coconut oil on the windowsill the other day and it went completely liquid so it doesn't seem to have a very high melting point :haha:

It melts at body temp so 36 degrees at the highest. I know I got some samples of coconut oil that were in sort of tube type things. Maybe you could use those? I'll look for a link

Lanolin has a completely different texture etc though. It's more sticky rather than solid.

right then, ladies, where do I get the stuff to do this? I don't want any special equipment etc, it's going to have to be a pyrex bowl over a pan on the hob, or microwaving it all.

I don't mind ordering online if needed, I just have no idea where to get the ingredients. Holland & Barratt? Or is it a bit more specialist than that? I don't think we have any shops nearby that stock ingredients for DIY soap/lotions etc or I'd start there.
