Help please :blush::flower:

One of the names I really, really like for our little girl is apparently in the top 5 everywhere and has been for a few years :dohh: I didn't know this when we came up with it, and it really put me off.

But - I'm due in about 2 weeks, and it's still the name I can't get out of my head. :wacko: In my mind, anything else would be a substitute for this name.....

I've told a couple of friends my possible name choice, both of them have young children, and both say they've not really come across any babies/toddlers with that name around here. Being in Wales, I'm starting to wonder whether it's actually that common here at all, or whether it's used more in other areas of the UK?

So - firstly, would it bother you that it was so common. And secondly, is there any way I can find out how many girls have been registered with that name in my area in the last year??

you could try the local birth registry, our local council has a section on their website for births and deaths register, worth a try xx

If I really loved the name its being popular would not be too much of a concern.

my favourite name that i would have at a drop of a hat is popular but cant have it due to my cousin being called it xx but if u love go for it and dnt choose something u like as u will be saying it for the rest of your life xx

you can find out the top 100 girls for Wales as a whole from Office of National Statistics (I just opened the file) for the latest data released from them for 2008:
https://www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/Product.asp?vlnk=15282

but they haven't provided it broken down by regions within Wales, only the top 10 names by regions within England eg North East, London etc.

When I had my son nearly 2 years ago apparantly Thomas was quite a common name (and probably still is) but we'veonly come across 1 other Thomas so far at nursery etc so go for the name you like I say! :)

If i had my heart set on it I would try to not let it bother me...cos at the end of the day this your baby and there is no point calling her a name that you are not going to enjoy saying every day :flower: x

Our little girl is called Ella, which was in the top 10 the year she was born. We didn't actually know this before we named her but we didn't care. We loved the name and it suits her so well.
If you really love the name, then I don't think you should budge on it because it's "popular". As you said anything else would be a substitute for the name you love.

Thank you :flower::thumbup:

It's much less popular in Wales than in England. Ok, still makes the top 20, but not top 5 :happydance: Happy now.

I know it's silly, and ultimately we should call her what we want, even OH can't understand why it made a difference to me. I was one of quite a few 'Catherine's in my school year though, and never liked it.

But I think we might go with it........:thumbup:

If its a name you really like i say go for it

The top ten isn't as important as it used to be anyway, apparently 20/30 years ago if you called your baby the most popular name, there would be at least one other kid with that name in their class, however now there is a much bigger range of names used, so if you give your baby the number one name, there will be one other kid with that name in six classes at school.

I hope that made sense!
