Confused about follow on milk

Lucas is 6 months old today and I still have half a tub of aptimel (first) milk left and a new tub of follow on milk.

I had fully intended to change him over when ive used up this tub but noticed my friend still gives her little girl the first milk and she is nearly one. It does say on the tub it can be given up until 1 year so im a bit confused about the benefits if they are both up to a year ?

if he is not on full bottels and wanting more he dosnt need the 2nd milk. You only need to chang it when baby is taking 9oz+ of the 1st milk

follow on milk contains more iron and vitamins i have changed over to follow on milk just to have peace of mind that my little one is getting everything she needs.
