Hello,

My son is just shy of 11 months old and isn't walking independently but he has started to climb things a lot. In order to prevent him from hitting his head on the edge of the hearth, we have a table against it... unfortunately he has just started using the hearth to climb onto the table. He has also started to climb onto and sit on toddler sized chairs. I remember my daughter climbing a little, right before walking. Interestingly, she stopped climbing once she could walk. Leo isn't nearly as driven to walk as Violet was, but I wonder if all this climbing is building skills toward walking and if he'll walk by his birthday. Did you notice climbing shortly before walking?

My DS1 started climbing at 11 months, walked at 14 months. DD was not quite so adventurous and did not start climbing until after she started walking at 15.5 months.

I don't think there will be any correlation for us between climbing and walking, DS is just over nine months and has been climbing since he could pull up at 7 months, although not as reliably as now. Pretty sure he only learnt to crawl so he could get to new things to climb, he didn't crawl till 8 months. He shows no motivation to walk yet and doesn't even cruise unless it's to get to something to climb. He is developing strength and confidence which will help him when he wants to walk but I can't honestly see it happening for us in the next few months. We are spending a lot of time at soft play centres so he can climb safely though.

Could definitely be a correlation, as mine climbed too before walking. I think it helps develop balance and strength in the core and legs, as they usually use one leg at a time to stand on while they climb onto something.

She still climbs all the time. As well as walking and running everywhere - she's a very busy bee!

Same pinch. My 13m old wants to climb everywhere, bet it sofa, bed, table and is successfully doing it..

He isn't walking yet, though i feel he is almost there..

I hope not as my eight month old has been climbing every where for about six weeks now.

Mine both walked at 11 months, Thomas was always much more adventurous though. He did everything before Sophie, grabbed at toys at 9 weeks, crawled just before 6 months, cruised at 6 months, learnt how to climb backwards off beds or sofas at 8 months...even got hair and teeth before she did! I think he first walked at 11w 17d and Sophie walked at 11w and 6d. She did climb very low objects at 9 months but didn't roll or crawl really until then though.
