I am pretty sure I ovulated almost two days ago-all the signs EWCM etc- and now I have really painful erect nipples and heavy breasts. I was wondering if this is a sign of progesterone? If it is, would that mean I have good levels of progesterone?

And could I take this as a sign I did infact ovulate?

Thanks! : )

Hi lolasmith,

I get this every cycle without fail - it usually starts on cd19/5dpo, last a few days (3 usually) drops off around cd22/8dpo then on cd27/13dpo af shows up.

This morning im going to get cd21 bloods done to check hormone levels. My doc has in the past told me its most likely due to levels of progesterone post ovulation.

Sore breasts is also a sign of pg but for me, they feel the same at this time every month, nothing out of the ordinary so at least I know where I stand prior to af/bfp next week!

Hope this helps and that it is a good sign for you!

Hi lolasmith-

A lot of women experience sore/heavy breasts after ovulation, including myself. In fact, I've experienced it this cycle. Through charting I have been able to correlate it with my BBT (basal body temperature). After ovulating your luteal cycle begins (the cycle after you ovulate) and your BBT rises because the amount of progesterone in your body elevates to thicken your uterine lining in preparation of a fertilized egg. As your luteal cycle progresses and there is no fertilized egg your progesterone levels drop and in return your breast soreness/heaviness slowly subsides. My BBT has dropped off today and yesterday and my breast soreness is slowly subsiding. This means that my body is getting ready to shed the uterine lining and soon I will begin my new cycle.

I hope this helps and please keep in mind this is not standard for anyone as everyone's body is different i.e. I get sore breasts after ovulation but not during my period, where as some women do not get sore breasts directly after ovulation but instead right before or during their period. This is just a correlation I noticed based on research and temping. I know breast soreness/heaviness is not a wonderful symptom of post-ovulation; however, it is a great indicator that your body is doing its job!

I get sore breasts 1 or 2 DPO. It's annoying, but it's a good, reliable indicator that I had an ovulatory cycle.

Thanks everyone. I was getting pretty confused looking at other forums and sites.

Some mentioned breast pain as a sign of low progesterone, and others as a sign of progesterone surge.

Would I be right in saying that if you ovulated breast pain following that is due to a surge in progesterone and a good indication that you ovulated?

Whereas general breast pain throughout can be due to low progesterone only when you havent yet/don't ovulate?

Thanks again!! : )

That is the overall impression I have as well.

As to getting rid of it, OTC painkillers help for a little while, and I find a hot shower or bath or hot water bottle helps hugely.
