hi ladies,
my lo has reflux and is on sma staydown however he is becoming increasingly constipated...thinking of switching to cow and gate comfort or aptamil comfort, which is best in your opinion?
also, ive heard you have to make up these bottles with boiling hot water, how do you mange for night feeds and days out?
sorry for all the questions xx

I don't know the difference between them. We were on the regular Aptamil when we switched to C&G Comfort, but I didn't realise there was an Aptamil Comfort, and actually I don't think they sell it here. Together with the MAM bottles, my LO's colic is pretty much gone.

And as for making it up, you have to make every milk with boililng water, so it's no different. We make ours up with boiled water gone cool, or fill a thermos with boililng water and use it throughout the day. It may not be boiling when we actually use it, but it's still warm. It's the cheat's way, but my LO has never suffered because of it.

SMA staydown isn't made with boiling hot water, which is why the OP is asking :)

You can either make the feeds up with boiling water, fast cool them (in the sink or in a bowl of water) and then put them in the fridge. Or, another way people do it is to sterilise the bottles, put boiling water in the bottles, leave them to cool, then add the powder as you need it. Both ways, the bottles need to be used within 24 hours.

In terms of going out, if you have the water in the bottle, you can just add the powder, warm and go. Not sure how mummies who pre-make their bottles do things, as when I've gone out I've taken a bottle of water + the powder out with me.

ETA - I've used both Aptimil and C&G Comfort, and didn't see any difference between the two. I'd say use whatever one you prefer (and can get!). It's worth mentioning that they are both thick formulas, to the point where I had to go up a teat size when I used them. I don't know how thick SMA Staydown is though, so if it's thick as well, you might not need to :)

I have used cow n gate for my youngest boy as a baby and was.fine on it, however I had my baby girl on aptamIl comfort and switched to c and g but have noticed her poops have gone watery even though ingredients are exactly the same, so am gonna switch back.

Thanks ladies, went out last night and got aptamil comfort, but lo vomited it back up everywhere and started choking (has been to AnE in the past for this) so it seems staydown is the only thing that works for him, he's just in pain trying to poo n now I don't know what to do!! X

Hiya hun, you need to give the milk a chance and also when my twins suffered bad with the.same I used Dr brown bottles, sma LF milk and gaviscon for infants. Go see your doc hun, tIere are other alternatives to the stay down milk. The milk mentioned is lactose free. Otherwise give the the aptamIl at least a week. hoping you get sorted soon, it will improve as baby grows. All the best

I agree that it can take a while to work; my LO took about 5 days to have her colic lessen, but they say it can take up to 2 weeks to see a difference. If you want to seek further advice though; talk to your doctor

In terms of constipation, there are other things you can try. Sips of water between feeds can help. Also, either pure apple juice, orange juice, or prune juice can work wonders. You just need tiny little amounts on a sterilised medicine spoon, a couple of times a day.

None of the comfort formulas made any lasting impact on my LO's constipation, but the fruit juices (on the advice of my HV) did help.
