Dear all,

I'm a mum to a normally very settled, very happy 7 week old little girl. About ten days ago my little one started having explosive diarrhea and was sick a few times. Off to the GP we went; he suspected gastroenteritis and gave me advice to prevent dehydration. A couple of days passed and my little girl started looking like she was in pain (crying, arching etc) during feeds and mainly right after. She almost never cries but she spent hours and hours crying practically inconsolably and her milk intake dropped dramatically. The vomiting stopped, but the diarrhea continued. She also started not being able to sleep in her cot and gurgling and moaning every time we would put her down horizontally. Her nose seemed blocked like she had a cold, but with no cold in sight.

So the GP sent off a stool analysis and suggested trying a lactose free milk just in case she was lactose intolerant. We got 48 good hours on this milk and I really thought it would do the trick, but three days after starting the new formula she started having blood in her stool on top of everything else. Thankfully that morning we already had an appointment with her pediatrician for an unrelated issue, so I took the nappies with blood to him and he sent them off for a stool analysis and ran lactose intolerance tests on them too. He said he thought she might have cow's milk protein allergy or intolerance and he put her on nutramigen lipil. She's now been on nutramigen for 5 days and I'm now getting thoroughly confused.

She initially didn't like the nutramigen that much, but her milk intake has actually steadily improved on it. She's now close to what she was eating before all this and she's gaining weight again which is lovely to see. She's a bit more settled than she was last week and seems to be in less pain, but she's still in a fair amount of pain for a few hours a day at least and still wakes up screaming suddenly like she's in pain (though less than before). Her tummy that was really distended before now seems to be of a more normal size, though she is really really gassy on the nutramigen (but it does come up which I guess is good). She does still gurgle and moan (less but it's still there) when we put her down and we have been unable to sleep properly or do anything else really as we've had to keep her upright to get her to sleep at all throughout the day and night. Mainly I guess she still has diarrhea, though this has improved slightly, and blood in her stools.

Her pediatrician, who I talked to yesterday, said he would have expected her symptoms (especially the blood) to have improved on the nutramigen if it was CMPA. We're now giving it a couple of more days before we review, but I'm kind of lost. If it's not a CMPA what on earth is it?! I get things like this can be a bit complicated and not straightforward to solve, but I just want my little girl to not be in so much pain so frequently....

Has anyone else had similar experiences with their little one?! What did you end up doing?! What helped?! Are there different milk options that worked for you!? I really would greatly appreciate any feedback...!

Thank you and I hope this finds everyone well!

I don't think you're supposed to give cow's milk to infants. Generally it's not good for anyone, and in kids it is linked with a lot of negative side effects. Not to mention, the proteins in cow's milk are different from human milk proteins and cause problems of digestion, intolerance, impaired absorption of other nutrients, and autoimmune reactions. This is probably why you are having this issue.

Hi there and thanks for your reply! :)

Obviously when I say cow's milk I mean to the milk that is in stage one infant formulas....! I would never give actual plain cow's milk to an infant....!
