Charlotte has started to show an interest in colouring. I've been having to prise felt tips and biros out of her hand. She had a go with crayons at playgroup on Monday but they were hard work and don't make much of a mark on the paper for all the effort.

What's a good first colouring in thing? Is it big fat chunky crayons or something else?

Id say felt tips probably, crayons youd need to press to get a mark out of but would be easier with felt tips.
You can get chunky sized ones im sure.

The chunky crayons you get from the Early Learning Centre are really good as they don't need any more pressure than a pen to make a mark.

I'd say, with crayons it dependswhat ones you get, I got some of Asda's own, I think about 64 in the pack, normal size and my dd (15months) loves them, she hold them really well and you don't have to press on really hard with them either. I wouldn't give her felt tips and the last time she got hold of a biro she drew on my dining room chair!!

Id have to say colouring pencils, both my little ones love them.
If they decide to draw on things they shouldnt it comes off better than felt tips. And both of little ones liked to EAT crayons... I dont know why!

Before anything helen i would go for Crayola washable
The do some brilliant chunky first markers

I know they say 18 months but my little nephew got them for his 1st birthday and he loved them, they are so easy to hold and they dont make a mess :happydance: I know they are paints but kids love to paint dont they, I am going to get Dec some for christmas.

big chunky crayons are good and no no to felt tips although like Jo said the crayola washables would be good although I'm not too sure how washable they'd be on furniture :dohh:

They come out of carpet Mamafy

oh good stuff I must get some of those for Katie and Joe:happydance:

I want to give it them now!! Can't wait to see kieran with it! x

Another great link Kaci:dohh: my oh says stop posting:rofl:

I bought one of those Crayola Beginnings toys for Bethanie and it was terrible, plus the fact that she preferred to suck the water out rather than draw with it. I had to stop that game when she started drinking water that had been in there for about 3 days.

I found Crayola crayons to be the best (they do some from 12 months - little chunky ones). Hope that helps.

i wont let rhys use his aqua draw because he does the same thing.. just sucks the pen

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. We went for the Crayola washables in the end though it was near on impossible to find them. Can you believe ToysRUs and ELC near us don't sell any crayons at all!?! What the hell is that about?

Got them in Staples in the end and they had quite a nice selection of kids drawing things. Also got a roll of lining paper for them to draw on.

As for aquadraw... nice idea in theory but ohhh... the tantrums we have every week when I stop them sucking the water out of the pens at playgroup.
