The pills usually soften your cervix allowing for your body to induce itself., i.e. it allows the cervix to open as it does during childbirth - its also given previous to a d&c.
Personally, id never go for a natural mc but then again ive gone through enough to know it was hellish with the contractions and whatnot. I also didnt wanna see whatever was left to go down the toilet. And my d&c meant that i was right as rain mentally nearly right away and physically within a week.
Its all a very individual thing. You yourself have to weigh up whats important to you. Anyone elses experience, mine included, might have no bearing on you.
I opted to take the pills this past thursday. I found out that my babies didnt have heartbeats at 9weeks (identical twins).. and my body was NOT going to do it naturally. And d&c was my last option.
With the pill - I had to insert 2 vaginally.. every for hours.. for 4 doses. So I started at 10pm.. and took my last dose at 10 am.
I took the pills Thursday night at 10. Went straight to bed.. my dr. had given me 800mg motrin to take for pain (are you kidding me.. i took these for cramping in middle and high school!!!) - anyways because she gave me that I didnt think it was going to be as bad.
At 1am.. I woke up cramping and decided to take a motrin. Went to the restroom.. and the diarrhea (sorry tmi) had started. The cramping got worse.. and at 2am.. had to take my second dose. I then started vomiting (which said it was a side effect of the pill - so maybe you will be lucky!) and the pain got much worse. At 3am.. We phone the dr. because I hadnt started bleeding.. was vomiting (didnt know at the time it was a side effect).. and in pain. He said if I had any kind of pain killer to give it to me. I took a codine and finally had some ease and could lay down and rest!!
At 5:30am.. I got up because my water had broke.. and when I sat down the water came gushing out.. at 6am I took my third dose of medicine.. and laid back down. It was soo much easier with better pain meds.. I dont know what my dr was thinking. I started passing large clots but didnt ever check the toilet to check for the tissue.. i saw pieces of tissue on the toilet paper and didnt dare look down. By my last dose everything had calmed down.. so that makes me think that I passed it.
To be honest.. I would do this again.. with much better pain medicine than 800 mg motrin.
I hope this helps you. I am only 23 and surgery was not the best option for me.
