D&C question - lots of scraping - TMI

Hi all -

Quick question as I am kind of panicking here.

I had my D&C today. During the procedure, the doctor mentioned that the sac had adhered pretty firmly to my uterine wall, and she did suction and had to scrape quite a bit to get it all off. This was my first D&C and I don't know how hard is too hard for the scraping - I mean, it felt like pulling inside me, and also I could hear it a little just like someone scratching at your skin or something.

Now I've been reading about accidental removal of the endometrium during a D&C, and Asherman's syndrome, and I am totally freaking out. Some studies say that the rates of Asherman's after D&C for a missed miscarriage are 30%!!!! I cannot believe that we wouldn't hear more about it if that was true.

So anyway, please if someone can offer some reassurance that (a) this is what a normal D&C feels like, and/or (b) this Asherman's stuff is not as bad as they are making it seem. I would be forever grateful!

Ok so I did a little searching on these forums and found that apparently Asherman's panic is not all that uncommon, that research is out of date, and that statistic is backwards. So that eased my mind a lot.

But I'm still wondering what kind of scraping people who had a D&C with only local anesthetic endured? Mine was in a concentrated area for maybe two minutes? It seemed somewhat forceful but that could just be my overactive imagination.

Many thanks in advance!

I didn't know some women weren't completely put under anesthesia during a d&c. I fortunately don't remember a thing from mine. I had an asherman panic too when I didn't have a normal period after my d/c. I had to be put on progesterone to restart my cycles last month & I feel like I'm finally back to normal! It's not always an easy healing process but I hope your's is quick!

I had nothing for my D&C. No anesthesia. They tried a local, but had no effect. It was complete agony, and instead of taking 10 minutes like they estimated, they were in me for what my hubby estimates was closer to half an hour. They scraped and used suction. It was so painful, I can't honestly guess how long they spent in any particular area. I am likewise worried about asherman's, but understand that it is quite rare, especially for first-time D&Cs.

Thank you both so much for responding! I really cannot believe how common they make it sound when you research Ashermans - but I have to think that if it was so common, doctors would be much more careful about allowing patients to get D&Cs.

Dill I am so sorry about your procedure, that sounds horrendous!!! I hope your recovery has been ok so far.

Laska5 good luck with this cycle! I'm glad things are finally sorting themselves out for you. I am hoping for a fast recovery but preparing for a longer one... sigh.

My sister is a nurse, and she says that it's mostly found in people who have had multiple/repeated D&Cs, and even then, is still a pretty rare complication. I suspect that there are ulterior motives to some resources trying to make it sound much more common (scare tactics).

And thank you for the well-wishes. Recovery has been pretty bumpy. They WERE really thorough, so my bleeding didn't last long at all, but my hormones have been pretty crazy. With no anesthesia, no sedatives, and no painkillers, though, I have to say that I hope I never have to deal with a D&C again!

Here's hoping that you recovery very quickly. I'm sure your doc did a good job. The pulling sensation is normal, as far as I know. I know I definitely felt it!!!

I ended up with Asherman's following my first miscarriage. I had just pain control during the D&C and I can tell you it lasted a really long time. The doctor said it was the longest one he had ever done. I pretty much felt like I had a plumber in there. Try not to panic, but Asherman's does happen. Not sure what the statistics really are, but it does happen.

I was also panicked about getting the D&C (I had 3 miscarriages before the latest one that passed naturally on their own with no complications so I really wanted that again but unfortunately it was not happening the 4th time around. Over a month of waiting with no bleeding.)

I had the D&C end of July. I recently had an SIS (saline infusion sonohystogram) that showed my uterus was absolutely perfect. No scar tissue, good lining, etc. It definitely put my fears to rest.

My D&C also lasted way longer than we were told it would last (in the OR upwards of an hour and a half but I was completely under so didn't realize until I woke how long I was under for). There was a bit of hemorrhaging going on and I imagine that was part of it.

Anyway, try not to worry. My experience was a positive one so thought I'd share it.

coucou11, how are things going for you?

Hey Dill - thank you for checking in. Things are fine, I bled for about 2 weeks after my D&C, ended up taking Misoprostol to supposedly slow the bleeding but it didn't even seem to do much. I have been temping and I think I ovulated this week (would be CD20 counting D&C as CD1). We are not trying this cycle, so I'm waiting for AF and we'll see how it all goes. Then we will start TTC again.

Fingers crossed!

How are you doing Dill?

Sorry to hear about the extended bleeding -- that's rough! :(

Not so good, my cycles are coming at expected times now, but I'm having some really abnormal bleeding this month and I'm not sure what's going on.
