So me and the oh want to go out for a day trip to the beach. Im combi feeding and shes started solids. I can pre sterilise all my bottles, bowls, spoons etc but what about my breast pump? I normally pump a few times a day and sterilise it in between. Am i right in thinking theres no way round this when out and I'll just have to not express that day?

Also what about hot water for formula feeds? How long will a flask last? Or do i just have to hope that cafes will have clean fresh water in their kettles?

No idea on the breast pump but can you not get ready to feed formula for you day trips.

i dont know about the breast pump issue so cant comment.

what i tend to do when out for a day is sterilse my bottles, then put the boiled water in and seal. then when out i add the formula (pre measured in tub) and put the bottle (lid on) in boiling water from wherever we are. sometimes she just gets the milk cold as well.

LO drinks her formula at room temperature. so I just bring a bottle of evian and pre measured doses of formula. Otherwise it's ready made stuff at room temp.

Pre-sterilise the bottles before hand. However in France, they recommend that you stop sterilising at 4 months.

Hmm ur not supposed to do that here tho the water has to be around 50 degrees. (hipp formula). I kno a lot of people on here do it but im not comfortable with it..

Forgot all about ready made formula tho thanx! Last time i tried it tho she wouldnt drink it. Atm shes on bottles of half bm and half formula! And bf morning and night.

No help with the breast pump I am afraid.

However you can get ready made formula, or I use a flask. The water normally stays steaming hot. I have a tommee tippee flask and its brilliant, but I suppose it depends of the type of flask. I then pre measure some powder and store in a milk dispenser container. Bottles I sterilise before I go. Easy :)

I take boiling water in a thermos flask. I actually use a flask everyday even when I'm in the house. The water is still nearly boiling, with lots of steam, and stays like that all day. I fill my flask in the morning and again at night. I also don't like to out formula in cold water

I give my lo his formula with pre-boiled cooled water at room temperature. I very rarely heat the water again before giving to baby. If we are going out I just take the formula in a pot with the bottles and make up fresh as we go. Baby has never had a reaction to it but obviously if you aren't comfortable with it then a thermos is the best way to go.

In regards to the breast pump all I could suggest is washing it out afterwards and then asking for some boiling water to pour through and over the items to sterilise. This is what I did when I was away from home and still expressing.

Can you hand express?

I always do and always have pre made my days bottles so we've never had this issue.

And I've never even sterilised bowls/spoons lol.

For the breast pump, if you can sterilize the parts before you leave and/or when you get back, washing in hot soapy water in between should be fine. I only sterilize my pump parts once a day.

I can't comment on the formula issue, as we just use hot tap water to mix formula. It's not generally recommended here to use boiled water.

How about using the cold sterilization tablets for breast pump parts. There are Milton ones here in the UK

As far as I understand it, it is not necessary to sterilise after about 3 months - look at what your baby does all day, puts hands and toys into mouth that have certainly not been sterilised. I wouldn't really stress about it if I were you.

Personally I would take a pre sterilised bottle and a carton of ready to use formula and warm it with hot water from my tommee tippee thermos flask.
As for the pumping I would probably just give it a miss while you're out and about and do it as soon as you get home. I suppose that depends in how often you usually pump and how long you are going out for.

I exclusively expressed and honestly many nurses told me if ure the only one using it just rinsing it out is totally fine. My lo was in the nicu and I pumped every 3hours 24/7 and I would just rinse with hot water (out of the tap, so rarely rven got that hot) after using it each time and then boiled maybe once a week.
I would put it in my pump bag to air dry after rinsing it out each time.
The bottles I was expressing into came from the hospital and were ore sterilized. After we got home I'd just presterilize the bottles before going out.

I never had any problems and lo was just fine :)

oh my gosh hot tap water?! Where are u from? I cant see on my phone. The hot water that comes out of our taps isnt even suitable as drinking water for adults! Its not treated the same and tastes vile.

Good advice for the pump tho i might have to do this... Or as a pp said ask for boiled water to do a quick rinse. Nope i cant hand express i have tried. Im also wondering how i will be able to store the milk and keep it cool while out. Hmmm...

How about overnight trips? Use the hotel kettle for water and make sure to give it a good clean first?

I have got some milton but it leaves such a nasty taste and smell on everything!

here its recommended to sterilise until u stop using formula around 1. Its cos the formula powder contains nasty bacteria that are much more harmful than the dirt they pick up on the floor. Thats why ur supposed to use boiled hot water too.

What I would do is cartons for the formula feed and pump and dump the breastmilk, then you don't have to worry about sterilizing the pump or keeping the milk cold.

If you are pumping breast millk, do you feed directly from the breast at all? That is by far and away the easiest if you are out, but obviously not a helpful tip if your baby doesn't breastfeed or you are weaning them onto formula. I wouldn't just not pump if your breasts are used to being pumped several times a day, you'd find that quite painful!

My can if formula says to use boiled cooled water to prep formula. We do that and when home make enough for 8 hours in a large bottle. While our I carry the water with and make up from premeasured powder warning it to the temp he likes in a microwave or cup if hot water since he won't drink it cold.

I'm in the US, and our tap water is meant for drinking. Is yours just meant for washing?

Oh my gosh, why does the formula have nasty bacteria in it? Shouldn't the manufacturer take steps to prevent that? The cans of formula I have don't say to mix with boiled water, although they do say that the formula powder is not sterile, so ask a doctor before feeding to a preemie or baby with compromised immune system.
