I started out this pregnancy slightly underweight so my MW wants me to gain about 40 lbs. I am now 33 weeks and have been hovering at +25 lbs since starting the diet. They gave me the okay to add more calories but for some reason I'm still not gaining anything. I go for my first growth scan Monday to check baby's size. I weighed myself just a few minutes ago at my dads (I know his scales aren't as accurate as the docs, but it gives me an idea) and I haven't gained anything in the last like week and a half. But I'm sure baby has, so that would technically put me at losing weight. I'm starting to worry but not sure if I should?!

Does anyone have any advice for me?!!? Please help!

Hi,

Both my aunt and I just had Gestational Diabetes during our pregnancies. Hers was controlled by diet and mine was controlled with medication. She lost weight while she was pregnant and the doctors were not concerned; however, she was heavier to begin with. I, on the hand, did not have to diet and I gained lots of weight during pregnancy.

Perhaps you could take medication to control your GD if the diet is causing you to lose too much weight? I'm not sure what makes them use diet over medication for most women. I have PCOS, so I was told to take my PCOS medication during pregnancy rather than diet (but I could diet if I wanted to) so I can't tell you if they would switch you to medication or not. I wish I could be of more help to you.

Personally, I wouldn't worry if you're not gaining weight in a week. Towards the end, my weight started to plateau. If you're worried though, it's worth asking your doctor.

Thanx for your response. I have an appointment with my perinatologist Monday so I'm assuming we'll discuss it then. But in the mean time i won't worry too much

The 'diet' to control GD isn't a weight loss diet, although some people do lose weight on it especially I'd they were bigger before, it's a diet designed to control your blood sugar, so using low GI sources of carbohydrate. Some women have so much insulin resistance in pregnancy it can't be controlled by diet alone. Diet is always the first option. Presumably you're taking metformin for PCOS, which is also used to treat type 2 and gestational diabetics, so if you were already on the meds, that is why they would have told you to keep taking them.

Powell, are your levels under control? High sugars can cause weight loss, although your weight loss could just be due to diet changes.

Yes, they are under control with diet. I'll have a random one that's a little high but nothing crazy and it's not a pattern. I'm thinking it's due to diet changes because I was eating a ton of fast food and went to eating wayy healthier. So I'm going to start experimenting a little more and trying to throw in some fast food (probably not the 'healthiest' choice, but I don't want to keep not gaining/losing weight either) :/ I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place!

I've been holding steady since changing to me GD diet. No gain no loss for 4 weeks. My dietician told me I shouldn't be losing any weight, and to try eating a few of the fast food options and see what they did to my sugars. The only thing that was ok was multigrain thin crust pizza... Any other fast food spikes my sugars way high. Good luck to you though!

Between my last two visits - I'm on weekly visits with NSTs- i gained 3 lbs :) i stopped following the diet strictly and have been eating more like i did before being diagnosed and that seems to have done the trick! My numbers are only high once in a blue moon and my MW agrees that i could have been misdiagnosed
