My LO has had a white tongue basically since my milk came in. No other symptoms or spots in mouth. No symptoms in me except that my nipples have been a bit pink, but that could be from being new to breastfeeding.

We've tried treating with nystatin, fluconazole (diflucan - short treatment), grapefruit seed extract, vinegar, and probiotics for me and baby. We finally tried Gentian Violet last week as a last resort, but... Nothing. No change. I should also add that we're taking all precautions including washing all clothes, blankets and towels in hot water and vinegar.

I'm starting to wonder if this is even thrush, as I've never heard of GV not working.

It doesn't sound like you have thrush to me. It can be normal to have a little bit of white on the tongue from breast milk. My babies always had a bit of it. Stop everything else and just add a probiotic in pill form for yourself, cause that can't hurt. You actually may have a bacterial infection on the nipple. they are finding that that can be the cause of nipple pain and pinkish nipples. All Purpose Nipple Ointment can be prescribed and it has both the antimicrobial and anti fungal with a anti inflammatory, it is amazing stuff and is very beneficial.

GL and I hope you figure it all out soon!!

Have you had a doctor/lactation consultant look in LO's mouth and check it is actually thrush? Some whiteness is normal just from milk residue. When my little girl had thrush it was small patches of thick white rather than a white coating on the tongue.

If you think you have nipple thrush, don't apply lanolin cream because it holds the moisture in and encourages the yeast to grow. I found it helped to rinse my nipples with a vinegar and water solution after each feed then let it dry before covering up again.

Apparently there are other varieties of candida and even other yeasts entirely that can cause thrush and don't respond as well, if at all to conventional treatment you would assume though that one of the alternative treatments would have worked. I agree it could be a bacterial infection or even just sensitive nipples xx

You can go to the doctors and ask them to swap your nipple and babas mouth if your not sure, the results should come back in a few days and let you know what you're dealing with!
