It's been three weeks now and he is still constipated! We were prescribed lactulose last week but it hasn't really made a difference
I'm going to give his dietician a ring to change his formula, we use aptamil Pepti for weaning but ever since his been on it (three weeks) his been constipated :(

I found the lactulose gave my LO really bad tummy pains :( We started using colief because she had a bit of colic and we also changed her milk to aptamil comfort and found this really helped her poo so I would definitely speak to the dietician about possibly changing the milk. Something else maybe worth a try is diluting some apple juice in cool boiled water? We were also told to try that! How often is your LO going without pooing? xx

I changed to comfort milk when my baby had constipation and in about a month he started pooing ok again and fig juice worked a treat.

First it started off like this, he went on a Tuesday and didn't go till Friday and when he did it was very hard and he was struggling to get it out then the next he went was the following Tuesday again very hard and his whole face was going red, now he goes every other day but it still hurts him to get it out and they are lil dark hard balls

OPe baby has a CMPI so comfort formula wouldn't be suitable. OP have you looked into coconut or oat milk if it's only for mixing with food? It's fine mixed with food and not as a main drink and far less likely to cause constipation. I'm surprised your dietician didn't suggest one of these instead of formula as they usually do for BF babies xx

Oh my god i am so fed up discussing my LO bowel movement with my babysitter very day. LO was very good at the start would go every other day but since she has been on solid food (since the end of may) it has got worse. She was on Latouse before and it seemed to help but now we are back to having foul smelling small balls poo. Have tried giving her water, water with orange juice, water with apple juice, water with prune juice but she is not having any of it. Have do the bicycle movment with her still nothing. It is breaking my heart that she can't go. To see the tears roll down her face breaks my heart. Have app with a ped in Oct and she app can not come quick enough. (TMI coming up) She is struggling so hard to do it that her anus is red and looks like there is cracks appreaing.

HV and doc are NO USE WHAT SO EVER.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Thanks summer, I'm going to look into those milks and yes it's only for mixing with his breakfast mainly, he was absolutely fine on aptamil pepti 1 but number 2 has just caused really bad constipation x

OMG that's is really bad hun, you should take her back and demand they do something! If the lactulose helped have you thought about giving that a go again?
Aww poor baby she must be in so much pain, I really hope you find something that works.

I've also noticed since his been constipated his poop smells weird :/ x

Hi babyjan

Ah it awful watching my LO struggling it breaks my heart. She was/is on that latouse again this week but only getting maybe once a day. I don't want her to become dependend on it. Hopefully when i go see the ped he will be able to tell me more.

Was just reading her on the web (i am from ireland) we have a hospital here in Dublin and they had an article about constipation in babies. It says give 2 teaspoons of brown sugar in a 2 oz of water. Also that banana's, rice & cooked carrot can affect babies bowel movement. My LO loves carrots so must stopped this for awhile and see what happens. Just a silly question here. Your name is 'Babyjan' does that mean your baby was born in jan sorry i am just been nossy. My LO was born on 4th jan 2012

Lol basically when I first joined bnb my due date was 4th Jan! I really couldn't think of another username so thought to make it something to do with my due date, I thought of janbaby but I can't remember if that was taken or not,
Anyway my LO came 31st of December eventually which was very surprising as I was expecting to go overdue lol, what about you when was your due date?

Sounds pretty silly now but was cool at the time :)

Don't worry about dependence on lactulose, it can't happen as its only a stool softener, it's only stimulant laxatives that you can become dependent on as the bowel becomes lazy.

The usual child dose of 2.5ml isn't enough to get much moving, 5ml is far more effective. If that doesn't work there is another stool softener called movicol that is a powder added to milk.

Unfortunately I'm a childrens constipation expert as my toddler has nerve damage in her spine causing constipation. When my lo got put on gaviscon for reflux she got bunged up so I gave her lactulose, 5ml each evening. Took her to the docs and he said to keep doing what I was doing.

Hope this helps x

My son takes two 2.5 ml twice a day, hasn't done nothing so we got an apt at the doctors later on today x

Wel LO was 14 days overdue. LO is my first. Was due on 22nd dec so was hoping that she would come ealy for Christmas so i could have a drink or two!! naught me. But of course she decided to hang on until 4th jan (little madam)

Give your little on as much water or baby juice as you can get them to drink. Lactulose 5ml to get things moving then 2.5ml until regular. If you are weaning avoid bananas when they are constipated as this makes it worse. Also, my little one would only go when in the right position when constipated, h had to be in the jumperoo or baby walker or standing upright supported and rubbing his belly firmly with my thumb. hope that helps xx

Got back from the doctors, she said to give him 10 mls a day of the lactulose and to speak to the dietician about changing his formula and I will definitely keep giving him more fluids.

Thanks guys x

Aww that's funny as I was due after you ( Jan 4th) and gave bith before you, for some reason I really didn't want him to come 2011 but I guess 31st is a nice bday.
Lil man obviously couldn't wait any longer :) x
