Hi girls.

I have previously posted here as well as in 'Toddler and Preschool' in regards my son's speech delay.

I previously posted that he is 30 months and can say perhaps 10 intelligible words, 10 words that perhaps family would decipher due to context (these words are missing beginning consonants or end consonants,) and perhaps 10 'random sounds' as his own little language.

My question is...(sorry part statement)... I now, (quite firmly after lots of research,) believe that my son has 'verbal dyspraxia (or US 'Childhood Aspraxia of speech'.) ...
Do I tell the the speech Therapist 'this' when I see them for my son's assessment on Thursday this week...or do I leave it to it to investigate by themselves????

Thank you in advance xxx

I would tell them for sure purely to save delaying investigating into the possibility of dyspraxia

i would just tell them you think thats what he has. they dont like it when you self diagnose hun. i had that problem.

they will do a really good investiagation and tell you what they think at the end and should ask your input throughout xx

Yeah I would tell them after all you are his mummy and spend the most time with him xx

Yes tell them. I am quite an avid researcher. In the 2.5 years we've been on this journey I've done a lot of researching and when we had genetic counselling In January I went In armed with lots of info. Not because I think I know what's wrong but I don't want to leave any stone unturned. The doctor thanked me for being so thorough and even asked if I was a nurse!!

My son has global dyspraxia - including speech apraxia.

At such a young age you may find they are reluctant to 'diagnose' a 'condition' as it's harder to tell and could be a range of factors (we were told this). I would certainly share your thoughts on the matter tho... Good luck :flower:

Yeah, I can completely understand that they will want yo explore all avenues.
I'll just tell them what things are like for us at home, what Joe can/tries/cannot say and let them know verbal dyspraxia is a concern of mine.

Thanks ladies and I'll post Thursday after the appointment.

Hiya.

Joe was supposed to have a Speech Assessment today, however to be honest it was more like just a chat between me and the Therapist whilst Joe played?
The therapist (who was admittedly lovely) asked me all manner of questions regarding Joe's eating, drinking, likes, dislikes, behaviour etc.. however she didn't look into his mouth or sit and play with him asking him any questions or using flash cards or anything?

Anyhow, formal Assessment or not she listened to what I said and looked at the list of what Joe can/tries to say and has referred Joe to our nearest Speech and Language Preschool to be put on their Outreach list where he will be seen and worked with at our home instead of us visiting a formal setting each week.

I didn't in the end say I thought Verbal Dyspraxia (fear of getting it wrong I suppose or annoying 'those with the qualifications',) however I did ask the Therapist what she thought was going on? She said time will tell...he could just be a very late talker and doesn't feel the need to communicate verbally, or there could be issues that will present. (She herself said Dyspraxia is a possible issue but very, very rare.)
She told me the therapists that will come for outreach are very specialist and 'fab.'

Let's hope so.
