Hi all.

Just after a little advice.

A bit of history (may not be relevant but thought I would mention), I have PCOS and am potentially insulin resistant as metformin/GI diet allowed me to get my BFP. I am 18 weeks pregnant and otherwise healthy. My mother has type 2 diabetes.

Just recently (the last few weeks) I have noticed that if I eat anything sugary/carbs at all for breakfast (any sugar on cereal, any corn cereal such as cornflakes, any jam on bread, bagels) about 30 minutes later I start feeling very anxious and jittery. I feel dizzy and my heart starts beating fast.

What could this be? Could it be the start of Gestational Diabetes? I googled it, but all I can see is the GD has no symptoms. I tried to see what would happen if I didn't eat (not good, hunger pains!) or if I ate a low carb/low sugar breakfast (such as scrambled eggs on wholemeal toast) and it improved things. Does this mean I have a sugar problem or is this a fairly normal thing for pregnancy?

Thanks for advice in advance!

Hey I don't come on here often but just noticed no one replied, so I will.

It could be related to GD but I think you're too early for GD anyway. It could be hypoglycaemia which does seem to pop up more during pregnancy.

Last pregnancy I had it majorly. I would get nauseous, anxious, and lightheaded 20 minutes after breakfast. I've never dieted in my life and have never looked at what I eat (plus, last time I had major food aversion so I basically ate whatever I could swallow).

This time I realize it is probably due to sugar drop and started looking into what to do to alleviate this, because it's horrible. I ended up buying a blood glucose monitor so I can at least figure out what the issue is when I feel this way. I now realize I can't eat cream of wheat and I try to eat some kind of protein with as low carb/sugar as I can find (which is super hard, I love my carbs).

Things have improved a lot in the last 1.5 month since I tried to cut down on sugar.

I don't know if I have GD. I technically didn't pass the test in my first pregnancy, but I also didn't realize you weren't suppose to drink a coke right before the test too, so of course I'd fail. The second test was going to be an alternate test (because the sugar drink from the first test put me in a panic attack for 3 days after) but because my OB forgot to sign the blood acquisition form, the nurse refused to take my blood. So I never figured out if I had GD last time.

This time I am refusing the test. I'll just eat with minimal sugar and check my blood glucose if need be. That's pretty much all you'll do if you have GD anyway.
