Does anyone know anyone that has claimed DLA successfully if they are hard of hearing.

DH is HOH, and wears hearing aids, and his day to day life is affected by it. He cant use a telephone. He cant watch TV without subtitles, he sometimes cant hear me when im sat in the same room as him. He'd never hear anyone breaking in, or the smoke alarm going off. He cant hear traffic. And he cant understand strangers well at all.
So obviously all this affects his job prospects, as he cant do certain things, or work with the public.

Just wondered if it might be worth applying for?

employment is irrelevent with DLA - you can work full time and claim DLA. I do know of people who are HOH or deaf and have sucessfully received DLA.

Thanks hun. He does work, but in a factory, on not much more than the min wage. I might try and research it, to see whether its worth him doing it.

A mum at hollys school is hoh and so is her husband hun and they get £350 each a month
so id call them to see wat they say hun :hugs:

From a slightly different angle, if your husband uses his hearing aids on a regular basis and still can't hear in all of those situations, then I'd get the hearing aids checked out. I work as a hearing aid specialist, and while hearing aids are never perfect and never a substitute for normal hearing, they should make a big difference in the situations you've mentioned.

Good luck with the DLA claim, and I hope he gets some better hearing soon...

Here is the website for what criteria is needed, I have taken you to the adult hearing impairment section, on the left hand side there is some options have a look at sources of evidence, hope this helps https://www.dwp.gov.uk/medical/med_conditions/major/hearing/

Yeah my DH uses his hearing aids from the minute he gets up until the minute he goes to bed.
Without them, he wouldnt be able to hear a thing at all. You would have to directly shout in his ear. And i mean shout!! So they do make a huge difference, but compared to normal hearing, his hearing impairment is great.
Like i say, if its just us two in the room, he can hear me, with aids in, but i speak up, and clearly, and more often than not, have to repeat myself 2-3 times. When we go to my parents house, he cant understand what they say, because they are speaking normally, like they should, but he cant hear them well. Same with all strangers
We always have the subtitles on (my 3y old think its normal and doesnt understand when he see a tv without the writing as he says!) but then sometimes he still cant understand it, and ill have to clarify it.
He couldnt hear the telephone if he was in the next room, or the door, or even Jack shouting for him.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg really. Its amazing what we take for granted. My husband has never heard a bee or a fly buzz. :sad1:

honestly, so long as his job doesn't have him doing something that on the forms he says that he can't (like an audio typist for example!) his employment status is irrelevent. Even if you work, there are added costs to having a disability and that is what DLA is for - to help with those extra costs.

What I would advise is that you go and see a welfare rights officer and get them to help you with your claim. DLA can be notoriously difficult to apply for sucessfully.

hi hope you get it sorted, i know what its like living with someone who is deaf, my oldest son (hes 9) has moderate hearing loss and whils he wears his hearing aids at school, he takes them out as soon as he comes home as he hates them . its wierd how you get used to it and adapt like having the tv on loud or with subtitles like you say, i dont let him play out (apart from on the back garden) on his own as he cant tell where the traffic is coming from and it terrifies me, he is getting some new aids on the 4th june which he likes so hopefully he wil wear them more, i just feel awful nagging him to wear them
when he was about 3 before he got his aids people used to comment on how ignorant he was :hissy: and it annoyed me that i had to explain that he suffered from hearing loss. another thing that annoyed me was that when he first got his aids people used to see him wearing them and think they had to shout :dohh:.
when we were at an appointment the other day at the hospital there was a lady in the waiting room from the childrens deaf society and she was talking to us about what they do, (day trips etc) she also said they help with claiming for dla. so maybe there is the same society for adults?
sorry about the long post
hope you get it sorted xx

Thanks for ur reply danimarie. :hugs:
Sorry to hear ur LO has hearing troubles, but if ur like me, you get used to it, and it becomes a way of life i suppose. Not many people understand hearing loss, and that people are still normal, and dont necessarily have learning disabilities etc. I just explain it to people, compare it to - some people need to wear glasses cos they have poor eye sight...

Im rambling! But thanks, not really sure who to turn to for specialist help in filling the forms, but im gonna make some calls and do some more research. It will probably be me that fills in the forms for him. Ive had to really think about how it affects him, us, because like i said, its a way of life now, and normal to us.
Hope u get ur claim sorted, and best of luck hun xxxx

Hope you get it sorted hun, as chel said the form is really long and takes ages to fill in. You can always apply online if it easier for you because that what i did, hope you get it sorted soon though
