Do dentists do fillings for free for pregnant women?

I've got a NHS Maternity Exemption Certificate (card, rather) and it says I can use it for free Dental treatment too.

Does that mean just for a check up, or does it include things like fillings, and having teeth taken out etc?

I've had a look at my teeth and they are really in need of fillings...the old ones have come out a long long time ago.

Will it be free? And what do I need to do?

all basic care is covered , you might not be able to get something like a root canal completely paid for or crowns but fillings yes, i really need to get my mw to do another form for me as i lost the last one

i went a few month back as i thought i needed a filling but in the end it turned out i didnt.
i was showing and had a bump and they didnt ask for my certificate thing.
he cleaned all my teeth for me and polished them.
id ring up ur dentist and just check and see what they say x

I needed a filling but they would only give me a temporary one because I was pregnant. However, he said they'd do it once the baby was here and yes, the filling would be free as you have a year after the baby is born x

Some dentists are a bit funny about doing too much work on pregnant women but you still get a free year after baby has arrived so thats when im taking advantage of it.
You also get free eye tests as well and cheaper glasses aswell, nhs glasses arnt as nasty as they used to be

Everything that is needed is free, like if the dentist says you need a filling/crown etc its free. My last preg i needed a crown which was free, This one i need a wisdom tooth out but im trying to hold off till baby is born x

Ive had loads done while ive been pregnant!

Its free for a year after you've had the baby too. A lot of dentists are funny about what they will do but mine is great, he replaced all my veneers and everything after id had my daughter which saved me a hell of a lot of money

I heard that they only do amalgams for free, not the white fillings unless they are needed in the front or other very visible places- then they are not considered cosmetic. I want to replace all my old amalgams, so putting new ones in does not make sense lol. But maybe I am wrong- please correct me if I am.

Dentist wont do amalgam fillings whilst pregnant, if one is needed they will only do white x

Hi Kamkol,
I went to the dentist last week with my exemption card.
They are going to do a tempory filing until after baby is born, and then replace with a proper amalgam filling once the baby is born..they can;t do a proper one due to the mercury??? content which can be harmful to baby.
The exemption thing also allows up to a year after the birth. So I am also having a crown put on one of my teeth for free. (usually cost about £350!!)

My dentist advised of the risks with having an amalgam filling - basically that there isn't any evidence to suggest it harms the baby but they can't guarantee it. I guess it depends on your dentist what treatment they will do xx

I think your dentist has to be registered to accept NHS patients before you can get your treatment free but I could be wrong. We've been on a waiting list for seven months to even get seen by NHS dentist, is an absolute joke. However, I needed emergency treatment recently and went to a walk in centre and they were fantastic. They even said that once baby is here I can go back there to have my tooth extracted (as it has developed a painful abscess). Good luck!

I registered with a dentist after finding out I was pregnant. I am absolutely petrefied of dentists, so along with the shortage of NHS dentists I hadn't been for 14 years when I eventually went with DH in November. We luckily managed to get registered with a local NHS one and I want to try to get over my fear so that my LO doesn't pick upp on it!

I know I need a lot of work doing to my teeth and I know it will cost lots to sort them out, so I am also hoping to get as much as possiblt done for free!

I had a filling done in November - a permenant white filling, it was free as I am pregnant.
I didn't realise that I could get my eyes tested for free though?!

I didn't think eye tests were free. I paid when I had mine, although I can claim mine back from work anyway and money towards glasses so I didn't really have to pay much anyway.

I have got a check up next week, I don't think I need fillings, I hope not!

iv had mine since 9 weeks, go to your dr's they should give you a form for it.
I think mine was all done when I booked my bed at the hospital all was done realy quickly.
