do I need to sterilise these?

LO gets some formula now and how we do it is half the amount of water is freshly boiled and the other half is cooled boiled water from the fridge. The cool boiled water is put pre-measured into these:

So these pots contain cool boiled water which is put into the bottle - no formula ever touches these. Just out of habit I've been sterilising these along with the bottles but I was just thinking the other night, wouldn't a wash in hot soapy water be OK? What do you think?

Ok so if you aren't sterilizing what you boil the water in I don't see the difference. Its just a storage container. That being said I don't sterilize anything as I'm in the states.

You should sterilise anything that touches anything to make formula. BUT!! To make sterile formula you need to use boiling water so using cooled boiled water out the fridge wouldn't make it sterile anyway. (That's not me having a go that's just how your supposed to make it although I know some formulas are different) but I've used cold water a few times myself, just not something your supposed to do xx

Oh I was thinking of trying this method too is it quicker than just cooling it down? Here's what I was gonna do - pour half boiling water in an put all the scoops of milk in hence killing the germs in the formula then topping up with the other half of cooled water does that sound right?

In answer to your question if you are pouring the water in the container when its boiling in order to cool down then it is self sterilising anyway so soapy water is fine.

I do that too but keep cool water in bottles. Thought i was the only one hehe saves so much time! I dont sterilise the bottle with the cool water x

That's what we do pretty much - although you're likely to get jumped on for the suggestion of using boiling water by the resident pedants - remember it has to be hot but not boiling before they get all hissy fitty ;) . I tend to take the line that anything coming into direct contact with the formula powder needs to be sterilised (so teats, bottles etc) - things like the cooled boiled water in the fridge container doesn't (but periodically gets kettles of boiling water put in it to cool down anyway).

Just remember to account for the fact that the measurements of liquid on the carton work on the assumption you're putting the whole lot of liquid in, then the whole lot of formula... putting the formula in to half of the liquid will move the reading of the liquid in the bottle up, so adjust for that when you're topping up with cooled water to bring it down to drinking temperature (makes more sense when you're in front of a bottle doing it if my explanation seems a bit wtf)

I do, I just do it a different way - so if I'm making 6oz of formula, I boil the kettle and put 3oz of boiled water into a sterilised bottle, put in six scoops of formula and shake it all up. That way any bugs in the formula are dealt with.

Then, I put in the extra 3oz of cooled boiled water from the container into the bottle which already has 3oz of formula. It's this last bit that I was wondering about, whether or not I have to sterilise the container that has/had the cooled boiled water in it.

Heh heh, it's super quick!

Re that second point, that's why I do the pre-measured cooled boiled water (so everything in the fridge is exactly 3oz so I know I can just chuck it in and it will be the right amount) but that's still a really good point.

I use a digital baby food thermometer so it has a 'mix' temperature and a 'feed' temperature - anal retentive, moi? ;)

Ahh I see. I know what you were meaning about the last bit but because I thought that meant you would be mixing formula with cold therefore not making it sterile so therefore not needing to sterilise the pots, but as that's not the case it doesn't matter lol xx

The reason you should let the water cool for 25-30 minutes first is so that it isn't too hot and destroys the nutrients in the powder but is still hot enough to kill the bacteria. It's not just people having hissy fits and saying it for no reason. I honestly don't think there was any need for such a statement.

I think there was every need - so there :P

Of course, that's makes it alright then :dohh:
