Do you offer both breasts at each feed?

I have only ever given Erin one boob per feed, but now that she's getting bigger I was worried she may not be getting enough milk so I should start offering both sides. What do you ladies do? My mw and hv always said to just offer one, but I know some people give their babies both sides....

I'm a bit confused...

One side per feed is just fine, your milk production will keep up with her growth.

If you've got this far only doing one side at a time I wouldn't change it now.

I did both sides from he was about 2 wks old, but I have very small boobs and a very hungry baby. At least if she ever is mega hungry you've got a spare one to offer! I was always a bit stuck in that situation!:dohh:

I've only got small boobs too!

i offer both but only after i am sure she has emptied the first one, u can tell by squeezing ur nipple between ur thumb and first finger, if no milk comes gushing out lol then i know she smptied it and can go onto the next one, she usually only has a few sucks off the second one though, i try to give her 35mins on first boob then a wind, then 5-10mins on second if she is hungry, if she seems fine on one and is going 4ish hours between feeds then she's getting enough but if she wants feeding more often then maybe it is time she started getting more milk :hugs:

x

I have only ever offered one except when harry has a growth spurt to help to keep up with him a bit x

I used to just offer one at a time, but now she has both at every feed. It seems to work for us, but she was a very big baby 9lb 10oz at birth and i have particularly small boobies (well i did before pregnancy lol). If you have managed this far on just one and you don't think she wants more afterwards then stay as you have been, it wouldn't hurt to offer the other one after her usual feed though.

We do 1 boob per feed and then 2 if he's having a growth spurt.

Brenn gets just the one. And small boobs can make just as much milk as a big boob. My mother had HUGE boobs and could never make much milk. I have much smaller and I am still feeding my son pretty much 100% of the time at 9 1/2 months.

Usually I only feed from one side per feed. I only give Tristan more from the other breast if he is still hungry once the other breast is 'empty.'

Feeding from one breast per feed is fine as long as you remember which breast you fed from when it comes to the next feed! Usually, this is obvious as you feel more engorged in the fuller breast.

i've always offered both. sometimes she takes the 2nd better than the first, i'm sure sometimes shes just thirsty and wants extra foremilk.

Thanks for all your help girls! Feel much better about it now.

Even when she's been on me for half an hour I can still squeeze more milk out of my boob, so does that mean she hasn't emptied it?

My son has always just wanted one boob per feeding, but as a result I've had to feed him more frequently over the course of the day. Also he's a very quick feeder, max 10 minutes on the boob, I swear if he could he'd just inhale the boob or something. So maybe your Erin is just a more relaxed drinker, takes her time.
