When Dylan was born (39+6) he weighed 6lbs 8oz (9th percentile) he stayed at 9th for weeks and then climbed to the 11th and now he has dropped to 5th. The health visitor isn't concerned at the min but will be if he hasn't gained much weight by his next weigh in. He gained 9oz in 2 weeks followed by 4oz in the following 2 weeks (he was gaining 14oz every 2 weeks prior to that). He weighed 11lbs 13 oz at 15 weeks. Will he always be small or could he grow and be 'average' at some point?

I don't know to be honest  But my second son was on the 75th for all of his first year (8lb 1 at birth a week early) and then when he got to a year he just dropped of dramatically! He is now just below the 9th at 12 and a half so I guess it could happen the other way round?

The number they are on the percentile chart isnt really that important - its onlt when they dramtically change numbers e.g born at 9th and jump up to 30th or born on 95th and drop to 50th etc. A few numbers is neither here nor there. My daughter is on the 25th and is small and has always been roughly on the same percentile (give or take a few numbers). As long as your LO is gaining weight (albeit slowly but surely) then they will be fine. As he grows he will have growth spurts and you find children are all very different in height, weight etc.

My eldest was always in the 5th percentile - she was 6lb 12 at birth and had barely doubled her weight by the time she was a year, let alone by 6 months.....

Today she is a 5'4 size 10 20 year old :D Don't worry about it :hugs:

Logan is right at the bottom of the chart and has been since he was born. The HV is not concerned, since me and OH are short and small. If you LO has not gained quickly all they will suggest is increasing number of feeds. Try not to worry about the chart, its just a very rough guide, I ignore mine just because I know Logan is eating and drinking as much as he can (I know hes healthy, and will just be a small child).

H was born at 39+2 weighing 6lb 5oz and apart from a dip in the early weeks, has always been just below the 9th line. He is now 15lb 6oz at 6 months but no-one has ever mentioned or shown any concern over his weight so I think he must be fine.

I think it is more important to stay roughly along the same line rather than trying to 'catch up' which could lead to problems with their physical development... don't quote me on that though! Something to do with them putting on more weight than their developing bones can take maybe?

Lola was 2nd centile from birth until a couple of weeks ago when she jumped up to 9th. She was 10lb 14 at 13 weeks.

come and join us in the itty bitty baby club - in the group section hon xxx

Connor was born weighing 4lb 8oz and has always been below the 0.4 centile, HV has said hes never going to be biggest baby and thats shes happy with his weight gain aslong as he carries on gaining

Rebecca's currently dotting around the 9th percentile and she was born at the 50th! She dropped at 6 weeks (didn't put on weight for a fortnight due to bronchiolitis) but has stayed around the 9th percentile since.

The consultant said he tended to ignore the first 6 weeks anyway (birth weight is not necessarily indicative of genetic size) and as long as they're following a line it is fine (it doesn't really matter which line).

Do come and see the itty bitty group - lots of gorgeous, itty bitty babies!

Max was the fifth but the greedy bugger put on 1lb in one week and is now in the eleventh. I am petrified now!

Well my two were weighed about a month ago by the HV and at that point they were just below the 0.4 centile. Keeley was weighed yesterday at her hospital appointment and she weighed 15lb, 7oz, so I'm guessing Jake is probably about 1lb heavier than her, which he normally is (even though he was 1lb lighter at birth lol). They are both pretty small but gain weight at a steady rate. The HV has never expressed any concerns and always seems delighted with their weight so I'm not bothered in the slightest. They've more than doubled their birth weight so that's got to be good:-)

Jake was 11lb 1/2oz (exactly 5kg) on Monday. He was only 6lb 4oz when he was born. Highest he's ever been is 2nd percentile, he's now half way between that and 0.4 line.
I'm not worried, he's developing well, alert, nosey and so strong I can't believe it sometimes, I think he's just skinny cos I measured his height myself and he was 45th percentile.
HV was only worried when she thought he'd dropped down the curve a bit, and when I looked she'd plotted the graph wrong!! (Pointed it out to her the next week)

I wouldn'#t worry about the future hun. Imi is the other end of the scale and when I spoke to the HV abot it, she said it doesn't show how big/small they will be later in life :)

Evie is extremely small for her age, just hovering on the 2nd centile! although she was premature and weighed 3lb 12oz at birth. She is now only 17lb 12oz at 15 months, I am concerned about her weight, but I guess theres not much I can do about it , she is a very healthy and happy little girl. As long as he's healthy then thats all that matters. xx

hey hun, our babies were born a week apart and seem to follow the same. Mikey is 11lbs 9 at 14 weeks so i really wouldnt worry. xxxxx
