Does anyone have experience of sudden weight loss in their toddler?

In the US at least they are always by the pharmacy counter with the diabetic supplies. It's such a simple test I cannot believe the doctors you saw didn't just check. When I worked as an EMT we did them on any patient with altered mental status and as an EMT (which is a very basic provider, I wasn't even a medic) even I was allowed to perform glucose checks. I don't know how brace you are feeling, but before they invented glucose monitors, doctors tested for Diabetes by tasting the urine as diabetics will have sweet tasting urine BUT hopefully you can just get a doctor to listen to reason and check him.

If you barrow your grandpas, you just prick his finger or big toe and milk a little blood out then touch the little strip to the blood drop and the machine will read the number. If he is not fasting and you get a number over 200 you would want to take him to the hospital.

GP referred DD to A&E few months ago for suspected diabetes. Soon as we went into triage she had her finger pricked. Thankfully result was fine. They also referred her to a peditration for their opinion.

Hopefully you will get more help from your HV or alternatively go back and see another GP.

I don't understand why they didn't do anything at all. Since I've came away I'm thinking of all the things I wish I'd said and requested but in the moment I was just a bit shocked that that was that. I'd been up all night worrying and bursting into tears over thoughs of diabetes and cancer and then for them to just turn around and go he looks fine is astounding. I at least expected a blood test or a thorough discussion about it and possible causes.

Thanks for letting me vent about it and giving me information ladies. If my health visitor isn't helpful I'll take him to use my grandads.

How about celiacs disease? Could that be a consideration? Easy to treat and monitor these days with all the options!

Hey, so I got in touch with my health visitor and she was shocked at how it went at the hospital and confused as to why we were even sent to a&e. She got back in touch with the GP and asked her to make an urgent referral to see a pediatrition. The GP saw us again today and tested his urine which all came back clear, she checked his ears 3 times and gave us some anti biotics for them which I'm a bit confused about if they're only a bit red? And she referred him to a pediatrition which could take a few months but in the meanwhile I've got to have regular check ins with the HV, monitor his diet and feed him high fat foods. So it's slow progress but at least we're getting some action. All action and no answers.

Once the referral has been received by th paediatricians office the HV can help to chase it up and get you an earlier appointment or a cancellation, especially if the continues losing weight.
For my son it was coeliac but there were other symptoms too so we sort of knew as there was also a family history. Hopefully you won't be waiting too long.

Eta: have you got the vitamin drops from the health visitor? If not it might be worth getting some.

Least you are now getting somewhere and got the referall!. Hopefully you will get an appointment soon with it being urgent! .Its frustrating now because your just waiting for answers. Thank god you have a very good HV

Sounds like a great HV, glad you're getting somewhere.

It may be worth keeping a log of things you've done, Drs appointments, weight etc... so when you go to the paediatrician you have evidence. Not that you should need it but it would help to have clear progress

The antibs sound like arse covering from the GP. I'm glad you've been persistent, hopefully you'll get some answers soon- it must be worrying.
