My LO suffers with bad reflux. She has been on Infant Gaviscon and Omperazole which ceased to help her. She has recently been prescribed Domperidone which we are waiting to see if it has any effects.

I was wondering whether to try her on Anti Reflux milk. I'm going to ask at Baby Clinic tomorrow, may even ask a doctor too but I thought I'd ask here as well. In the past she was originally on Cow and Gate, then Cow and Gate Comfort and then she settled on Hipp Organic. But recently her reflux is terrible and she's no longer settled on Hipp. My concern about anti reflux milk is that it is a lot thicker than normal milk, so I am assuming it will sit heavier in the stomach and she will take less milk. I already struggle to get her to take enough milk and she is already down as failure to thrive. Another concern is that it will get stuck in her teats, like the comfort milk used to. She has a cleft palate, therefore cannot create a seal in her mouth to suck milk; she has special bottles which we gently squeeze when she sucks so that she gets milk. Her bottles only have two sizes of teats, newborn and all ages and she is already on the biggest one.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with the anti reflux milks.

Hi,

I can only speak for my own experience but I tried SMA Staydown milk for reflux and it was so thick it clogged the teat and there was no way you could have Gaviscon in there as well! She managed to drink it with my help of unclogging the teat and she was sick but it was all thick foamy sick!! So it didnt work for me I'm afraid. If you would like the tub I could send it to you and you could try it?

We are now using SMA Comfort with 2 Gaviscon and she's not being sick but barely drinks and screams and pulls off the bottle. Doctor is checking up on her today so no doubt will be moved onto meds.

Hope this helps! I have read though that some for some ladies it's the best thing they ever did! X

I had my boy on sma gold but he had terrible reflux! Sick loads after every feed, screaming and squirming during feeds etc and a very gassy tum! Went on to aptamil comfort milk, helped his tum but was still being sick and arching his back, even started to choke during feeds as he was so unsettled! I used to cry during feeds and i hated it!! Took him to the doctors and he recommended aptamil anti reflux, hasn't been sick once! And calmly takes his bottle, it's so lovely to have a nice calm baby!!! Makes feeding time something I look forward to now :) it doesn't fill him up though, before AR milk he was having 6-7oz every 4 hours but on AR milk he's having 7.5-8oz every 2.5 hours!!! Xx

Forgot to add he's usin mam anti colic bottles teat size 2 but he was using that before the AR milk! It's a lot thicker but seems fine on his teats and didnt have to change xxx

I cannot recommend Aptamil AR enough! It has done wonders for my lo.
Drinking 6/7oz every 2.5/3 hours (except at night) with Avent number 3 teats.

Skye can I ask if your baby was on any meds or Gaviscon before you tried Aptamil AR? x

She seems to be picking back up now and the new med seems to be working. I totally forgot to ask HV at clinic today about maybe changing formula. Think I will leave it a while but if she starts refluxing bad again, ask the doc.

He was on Gaviscon & the anti reflux script formula they prescribe you here in a australia. Both worked, but didn't stop it totally. We've now been vomitt free for two weeks. Not even any little spit ups:happydance:

Oh and its helped with constipation to. He was screaming in pain on the other formulas. Not now :)

I tried anti reflux milk but to no avail!... have you considered a cows milk protein allergy? my lg suffered for months with what they thought was just reflux. Found out months later she also has a cows milk protein allergy and since changing her milk to a hypoallergenic formula, Neocate, shes much better. Also with her Omeprazole being upped to 20mg x

I keep suggesting that but they just keep dismissing me.

Sma stay down is amazing!! If made properly its the same consistencey as normal milk ( boil water, refrigerate, add scopes to refridge water & then leave for an hour to come up to room tenp) it's awesome. But every baby is different.

Gaviscon made my LO constipated. Sma took a few days for her to adjust (from hipp organic) but she's fab now.

Good luck. Reflux is pants x

My baby has reflux and we have been through every formula and i mean every one in his short life. Poor wee guy. Anyway he is dairy intolerant and alot of reflux babies are intolerant to dairy. My wee guy is on Elecare which is the same as Neocate and 20mg of Omeprizole. Has ony just started but he is happier. He is a terrible feeder and refuses to take his milk so i am hoping the Elecare and Omeprizole dose increase helps

My son uses Similac Sensitive for Fussiness and Gas. It really works great for him huge difference between this and the regular Similac.

Do not use sma stay down if you live in a hard water area. Even following the instructions and leaving for over an hour will not stop the teats clogging. It was a miracle cure for us for 2 weeks then he went so downhill it was beyond a joke. He's now very happy on hipp, 2 gaviscon and ranitidine. Little pukey still but nothing projectile, no large amount and no screaming in pain.

I'd say give your lo a little time to get used to the current regime but keep this as an idea just in case. Hopefully you won't need to switch at all

That's really strange I live in inner London, very hard water & we never had any issues with the teats :flower:

Its really hard here and we tried everything - tap water, filtered water, as instructed, room temp water, etc. Etc. The only thing we didnt try was bottled water. It was better the longer the bottle was left and if I also used a milk frother but both me and baby got frustrated as hell with the clogs. Are you using variflow teats? These seem to be the trick to avoiding the clogs but neither of mine could or would stand variflow.

You poor thing, it's really hard when all you want to do is feed your baby. Yes we use the TT varied flow. We boil water, let it cool for 30 mins fill bottles then refrigerate. Then when we need them we take a bottle out add the powder and let it sit for 45mins to an hour.

I do find that if the water isn't cool enough - so hasn't been regfrigerated for long enough then it doesn't mix well. So we boil the water and fill the bottles the night before. If LO has a random night and wakes up i just take the bottle out and place it in tap hot water for about 10 mins whilst distracted her. Sma said this is ok to do but the milk mustn't be put into very hot water as it should only heated by the babies stomach acids otherwise it gets too thick to consume.

Gah! Cannot wait for her to outgrow the horrid thing!!
