I've noticed the past week or so I've constantly been hungry! It feels like right before I get my period and I'm eating everything in sight. I thought maybe it was because I had gestational diabetes and was on a strict diet and now I'm eating everything I couldn't for so long, but it's not. I'm actually hungry. All the time!! Does BFing do that??

I'm sure for some people it can, for me it made me extremely thirsty...everytime I sat down to nurse Mark had to bring me a huge cup of ice water and I would drink it all down while he nursed...though as he got older it didn't do that anymore

.....see the breastfeeding mom's weightloss thread. Its all about the sweets for most of us in there.

I have type 2 diabetes so my sweet tooth has become a real problem. I was really hungry too but that is my diabetes. Will you be having a post natal diabetes check hun? Just to be sure as it is a sympton along with thirst xxx

Definitely VERY thirsty and a very large sweet tooth for me! Never used to enjoy sweet things so much.

I almost always had to have something to eat when I was feeding. Though I had issues with savory not sweet but Im odd. BF does take up a lot of calories and your body will try to get you to eat and drink plenty to be sure you can keep up milk production.
Try crackers with cheese, homemade granary bread with a marmalade if you fancy something sweetish is great of course you can also go for fruit and fruit juice, apple, pear and mango I found particularly satisfying.
I did occassionaly give in to the NEED for a packet of crisps!

not hungry...but extremely thirsty! I have to have water on hand-can't be juice or milk, but a cold glass of water, or I feel like I am going through a depression of thirst, if that makes any sense :dohh:

I gained weight AFTER Darwin was born - I'm now trying to lose an extra 25-30lbs that I've put on because I'm constantly hungry & eat anything and everything I can get my hands on  BFing only uses about 300-500 extra calories per day, and I try to keep that in mind, but I'm so hungry I can easily eat much more than that. For some women, BFing can make you feel like a bottomless pit - you can't get enough food or water to feel satisfied!

I'm also thirsty all the time. I walk around the house with a 1L bottle that I fill about 10 times a day; it's very common to hear me calling 'honey! Can you please fill my water bottle' during a prolonged nursing session :)

During growth spurts I get extremely hungry. There have been times I have cleaned my plate and started in on my DH's. I would wake up in the middle of the night and be hungry. If I was not careful about eating enough weight would fall off me.

I'm hungry and thirsty all the time too. I have tried to ignore the madness and told myself it's because I got used to eating more at the end of pregnancy and it's just been hard to adjust to needing less... but no... I really do need the food lol! I'm not gaining weight so I'm learning to live with it. If I do start to gain I will try to keep a closer check on it as at that point it is clearly more than is needed!

I'm ravenous all the time! And not putting on weight so it must be the bfing along with all the extra work and less sleep that goes with being a mum.
