Hi all
I have just bought Cody a Doidy cup but need a bit of advice on how to use it. How much water should I put in it. I tried today with a little bit of water in the bottom but he just tipped it all over himself. Should I let him play with it empty first or should it always have some water in it?

Cody has been more or less exclusively breastfed with just a couple of bottles of ready made formula and has took to a bottle well too.

My husband just thinks I am stupid giving him an open cup at 6 and a half months old, and just scoffed when I said it said you could use them from 3 months on the pack. But saying that he didn't understand about BLW at first until he saw how well Cody feeds himself!!!!!

Any advice on starting out with the Doidy cup would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there.

I'm not sure that I did it right but my little one is now 10 months and only just able to use the cup as intended (and still very messily!) They just don't have the coordination or motor skills at 6 months to accurately tip it up. However, I always use it at meal times and at first I just placed the cup on her lips with my hand underneath to eliminate mess. Then gradually she has learnt the action required to drink from an open cup. I also let her practice with a small amount of water in it but it is pretty messy. She also loves tipping it all over herself just for a laugh!

Good luck!

I help Isabella with the cup, she only drinks water from this cup, all sippy cups get thrown on the floor. I am sure if you help at first, they will get the idea. Like your idea on the empty cup, give it a try. I know some moms here gave empty spoons to play with when starting BLW so I am guessing it's the same process.

Thats one of those slanted, handled open top cups isn't it?
I got my son one of those and he NEVER got the hang of it!!
Found a real cup much easier, and taking the lid off the tommee tippee one with handles.

I started Tobi on his doidy at 5 months and yes it went everywhere... it still does if I am not holding it. But if I hold it then he drinks really nicely from it. (except for the spit back!)

I think the sooner you start with it the better, it will come slowly and surely.

I put just a little bit in the bottom and tip it up to his lips. At the end of dinner I just let him play with it, and if it goes everywhere, fair enough.. he's going in the bath soon!

I think you'll definitely have to help him in the beginning. You can also try putting some very slightly watered down yogurt so so he can see the liquid and it pours but a lot slower than water so he has more control over it.
