Hi All,

This is a little off-topic, but I figure there are probably a fair number of Downton Abbey fans here, and the character Mary in the most recent season has trouble conceiving. Towards the end, she has a "small operation" "down there" to fix the unspecified problem, and the immediately becomes pregnant. Good for her.

Here's my question: What the HECK was wrong?? WHAT might they have operated on down there in the 1920s???

Does anyone know?

I was wondering as well!! Maybe an old fashioned HSG or something similar to clear out blocked tubes? It didn't seem like it was a serious surgery.

Here's a list of what I can think of offhand:
Septum (vaginal or uterine--maybe??)
Something structural with the cervix
Polyps
Fibroids
Tubal problems

It's also occurred to me that the writers are men, so they probably don't have the first clue about what might go wrong, and likely didn't check to see if there was "down there" surgery done for fertility back in the 20s.
