Hi all,

Have just been out and purchased the Dr Brown's bottles as my health visitor recommended them as my 9wk old daughter is taking sooo long taking her bottle but got a couple of questions:

Noticed that the lid has got 3 holes in it, does it stay sterilised as the teat reaches the roof of the lid? I normally keep my bottles in the fridge for 24 hrs - is this still ok?

With my previous bottles (avent) I used to put cooled boiled water (2 bottles at a time) and then put them in the fridge and mixed the formula in when I needed it - is this still ok to do with these bottles?

Many thanks in advance :)

you are meant to mix as per the formula instructins, but we make bottkes for the day and put them in the fridge :) lo struggles to it 40 seconds let alone for a kettle to boil and cool lol

p.s we use dr browns bottles.
one thing i will say is dont shake the bottle or do the lid up with boiling water in they leak every where - so annoying

dont know about the lid - sorry

im also using dr browns and i swear by them as my daughter is very colicy.they are arwkward to not touch when putting together for a feed as it has to be handled to put in place.i make sure my hands are clean and tend to use to thongy things supplied with the steriliser, its arkward but not impossible...and yes do not shake bottle!! there only disadvantage is they leak when shaked and you can lose quite a bit of milk.
xx

Interested to read about the leaking when you shake them - we have just one Dr Brown's bottle and we thought it was just something from with that bottle! The number of time's I've scalded myself and had milk all over the worktop! We ended up putting it away and just using the Tommee Tippee ones but LO is so slow with them...I might get the Dr Brown's one out again.

Thanks for replies, but do they stay sterilised? Do you clean bottle after each feed (hope not!) or do you keep them on the side for 24 hours?

Just a bit concerned with the holes in the lid and if they stay sterilised..

yes they will stay sterlilised for 24 hrs but it is recommended to make feeds up by when they want one
xx

also if you have used a bottle for a feed then it needs to be sterilised again
xx

Sorry, I am probably being confusing - I am blonde :) :)

With my other bottles I have kept them sterilised but empty in the fridge and made a feed up as I go along (the only thing I have done is put cooled boiled water in them and then put formula in when feed is due and heat it up)

yes if bottlesd have been sterilised and unused for 24 hrs thats ok.im kinda confusing to lol!!! lack of sleep i think
xx

yes there are holes in the rubber thingy that attatchs to the straw like tube.
xx

I found that the bottle leaked when i warmed them up. I looked on the Dr Brown website and it tells you when warming the bottle up slightly loosen the teat as the pressure causes the milk to rise up the tube when heated. I've tried this for the past 4 feeds and haven't had one leak on me yet.

Hope this helps xxx

Dr Brown has travel caps that are very cheap. You can put on the travel cap first, quick shake, then throw in the tubing and proper top.

I just use a baby spoon to stir formula. xx

I use the travel caps too- but I dont shake them, i swirl! When i shake them, i just get frothy, bubbly milk... which kinda defeats the object of these bottles!! Never had a problem with them: i make up 4 bottles at a time (water and powder) and pop them in the fridge once cool. When warming them up, loosen the cap or it will build up pressure on the inside & leak out of the inner tube. I dont have a problem with the holes in the lid, its only air touching the teat through these holes & LO is touching/breathing/licking air all day! lol! i reckon lids are just to stop teats touching surfaces/dog hairs if tipped over etc, and even with the holes, the teats wouldnt come into contact with anything nasty if tipped over! You might get a minisculr amount of dust through there, but no more than is wafting about baby's face anyway!

I use Dr Browns, I sterilise 3 at a time and leave them on the side (empty) until I need them and then make a fresh feed each time. You do need to touch the parts when you assemble the bottle but as long as you wash your hands with a good antibacterial soap (or antibacterial hand gel when your out) then that should be fine. As for the holes in the lid, I worried about the same thing when I first started using them. But the way I look at it, the air is around us all the time - if it had any terrible bacteria in it baby would already be exposed to it so I don't worry about the holes. If you are still worried though do you have any other make of bottles? I found Avent lids fit on Dr Brown bottles and you could use these for storage. I also shake the bottles too. Yes, they leak but I found swirling or stirring with the spout thing in them just didn't mix the powder properly. So I wrap a piece of folded kitchen towel around the neck of the bottle and shake it - this absorbs most of the leakage and the powder mixes much better.
Dr Browns do seem fiddly at first but they are excellent bottles - definitely worth the extra effort!

I use them and they will stay sterile I wouldn't worry about the holes too much. I make them up and put in fridge. Night time ones I make up with the water and add formula when needed then heat in bottle warmer.
It says on the instructions not to shake as it causes air bubbles and causes leakage as milk gets into wheel at top. U are meant to mix with the vent stick or steraliser spoon to dissolve milk. I just swish it round sideways rather than up and down!

Also the instructions say u have to remove the lid (teat and lid) when warming up as the pressure from the heat builds up and causes leakage.
