you know when you are making bottles up in advance, are u boiling the water, letting it cool for 30 min and then adding the formula and then letting that cool and then putting that in the fridge?
sorry just checking! I am only just starting all this!
the instructions on the box for immediate use say boil kettle, leave 30 min then add formula and give to baby, but I know many people make in advance and it is fine, was only going to make 4 bottles up for the evening and night feeds and then do the same in the morning.

thanks

Yes I boil kettle, wait to cool for about 20 mins make bottles then put in sink with cold water and ice packs to cool them quickly then put them in the fridge.
HTH

why do they need to be cooled quickly? is it stop bacteria growing? thanks! sorry I sound so thick but I want to check x

Yeah I think bacteria can grow if it's at room temp for too long.

I never used to let mine cool before adding the powder? And id leave them on the counter for 15mins and put straight in the fridge. The reason for not putting boiling hot bottles in the fridge is because it will change the internal temperature of your fridge (esp when your putting 8 bottles in there lol) which isnt good for the formula or the other food in your fridge.

I got tired of trying to warm a freezing cold bottle straight from the fridge. So id leave the boiled water in bottles (with nipples and lids on) at room temperature on the countertop and add the powder as i needed a bottle. This worked great as cooled boiled water will last for 48 hours whereas formula in a fridge only lasts 24 hours. Also works great when you are going out for the day as you dont need to keep the formula cold.
Just a thought :)

This is exactly what I do, altho I was led to believe that cool boiled water was only ok for 24 hours, not 48  I never keep it for longer than 24 hours tho and make a fresh batch of bottles every day.

thanks everyone! I have my first night of FF last night, and seemed to go well. today I am trying the method of leavng the boiled water at room temp and making it up as I go through the day. at night my kitchen gets a bit too cold to leave it without warming up

Hey hun, not critizing you or anything but i have been led to believe that the milk powder has to be added to freshly boiled water (about 20/30mins) because milk powder isnt sterile and the hot water kills off the bacteria. I make my bottles up in advance, boil kettle, leave for 30mins, make up all the bottles, pop them in cold water for 15/30mins then pop in the fridge. Then 10mins before hes due a feed i boil the kettle and heat it up. Or stick it in the bottle warmer. X

There is a way round this in that you can heat up the bottle with the water in first, then add the formula, which is what I do

My doctor said only premmies need to be worried about the formula not being sterile. Anyways if you want your formula to be sterile I think you need to add it directly to boiling water because after the water has cooled for even 20 minutes its no longer a high enough tempurature to kill bacteria.

ETA I just read the formula and it says its not made for premmies since it isn't sterile and to ask your doctor about guidlines for boiling water. (some doctors say you dont have to)
