Hi everyone

My youngest son Oliver is currently going through an assessment for ASD. Since he was a baby I have been worried about his development and the way he interacts wit others. He is now almost 4 and a year behind in all areas of development, he is obsessed with routine (we use pecs to help him), he struggles to interact with others and is very isolated. The SENCO at his school has put in a referral for him to be assessed by an educational psychologist. I was wondering if anyone else's child had been assessed? And if any of you know what the assessment will entail?

Also recently Oliver as begun to cover is ears in noisy places and whilst outside. People have suggested using ear defenders to help him but he is very funny about having things on is head. Are they worth a try or are there other ways to help children wit sensory issues?

The educational psychologist just watched much daughter in the pre school setting that I know of. I think she chatted with her and interacted with her a bit too then wrote her assessment from there. Iv never tried ear defenders but my dd used to cover her ears too she just grew out of it slowly herself very rarely she does it now

Educational psychologist is going to see my daughter soon. She has development delay and is at a stage of an 8mth old and she is 4 yrs old. They won't test for autism for another year. Every health care professional and peadeatrition has told us it's autism so I'm taking it she is. She used to constently cover her ears when out but she also is slowly stopping this. Everytime I heard a loud noise coming I would stop, tell her what was coming and cuddle her till it passed. It helped fir her to see when and where the noise was

You'll need to sign something to say you consent to the EP visit and it's basically just them observing your kid in various school environments. They might also have a chat or play with them. You'll get a report back later of what they observed and hopefully they'll be present at a future meeting so you can talk through this in person.

For the ear thing, how is he with hoodys? Not as effective as ear defenders, but a lot less contact with the ears if that's a problem. Can help make him feel more secure/confident even if it doesn't reduce sound all that much.

He can be funny with hoods because he takes things so literally. I.e. its not raining so I don't need a hood. But again its something I'm willing to try. Thank you for the suggestion :)

Before my son was diagnosed he was in mainstream nursery but it wasn't going very well so the educational psychologist went in to observe him in the nursery environment it was basically to see what she could do to improve his learning environment. It was suggested that he was moved to a specialist nursery and it's the best thing we ever done he's come on so well and he absolutely loves nursery he uses pecs in there and sees speech therapists weekly at nursery. The educational psychologist was again present at the meeting to discuss schools for my son(I firmly wanted the specialist school) educational psychologist was in agreement with me so she put her thoughts forward to the education board she's played a big part in helping my son get what's right for him. It's a really good thing to have the educational psychologist involved 😃xx
