Lately we have been using our electric blanket, a handful of times I have fell asleep with it on a high setting and woken up too hot later in the night - I had no idea they could pose a risk during pregnancy and now am terrified I've caused problems for my bean, can anyone give advice?

Hopefully everything is o.k. Just don't use it from now on and hopefully your body woke you up before your core body temp got too hot :hugs:

I'm sure everything is fine. Think of all the women who do things before they even find out they are pg and babies are fine. Those sweet little bugs are stronger than we give them credit for. Just don't use it anymore :)

I thought in general it was not good to sleep on, just for electric safety reasons x

So is it the blankets themselves that aren't safe? Or getting too hot while sleeping that's not safe?

I use an electric blanket because the bed gets cold and it makes me cold. So I keep the electric blanket on all night... usually at around 2 or 3. But I also have a fan that blows in my face all night so I never really get warm.

Never heard of this being a problem, but

i dont think its the blanket thats dangerous its overheating yourself !! i could be totaly wrong but i think i read somewhere that you wernt suppose to let yourself get too got, they did some research on rats and found that if mothers get to hot it forces your blood to the surface to help you cool and then limits the supply to the baby and in rats caused some problems in brain development !! This is something ive been particulary paranoid about and have been sleeping with all the windows open in my bedroom as i wake up boiling and sweating !! On the other side of this tho what about mothers who live in the middle east and have perfectly normal babies  i think you and bean will be fine and problems only occur in severe heat exaustion but health professionals advise not to get too hot to be on the safe side !! I would stop using the electric blanket tho xxx

I've read it's not advisable to use one when you are pregnant because it is unknown if the electromagnetic field may have some effect, why not put it on to warm up the bed before you get in then turn it off and use a hot water bottle on your feet! Also get some warm bed socks!

Don't worry about using it already as it is very unlikely it has caused you harm.

Because then it gets cold before I fall asleep, lol.

I don't have the blanket directly on my skin or anything. I have a sheet, quilt, electric blanket, and another quilt (in that order, from bottom to top) and as it is a new blanker the voltage is pretty low.

I've not seen anything yet that says they're not safe if used in a safe way (i.e. letting yourself get too hot) so I think I'll be okay.

Hi

I realise that this is an old post but at 7 weeks 6 days pregnant I used an electric blanket for 1 and a half hours on a high heat and woke up very very hot. I am now petrified as to the effect it may have had on my growing baby.

Has anyone done the same and everything been ok?

Thanks
