Eli .... *** updated first post ***

I love it- these days I do not think the religion behind a name is really focused on, I say of you like it use it, great name!!

Eli Owen is adorable! I agree that names are not so significant in "detecting" our religion these days. I know plenty of Marks, Lukes and John's that are not even remotely good Christians :)

My nephew is named Eli, and they're Catholic (course, it's the US, so we dispense with formality more often than not...)

Edited to add: My husband is Irish Catholic (last name Lynch) and they are all named after Saints...but if we were to have a boy, our name we settled on (and adored) was Leo Aloysius. Leo because my husband is a Leo, our anniversary is in the month of the Leo and we found out we were pregnant in August as well. It's also a strong name...but could be construed as pretty Jewish, I suppose :) We covered the "saint" part with Aloysius--my husband is a 4th generation Aloysius.

I do think it's a name worth fighting for. It's a name you want your child to be called. That should be enough :) Let them weigh in on what he wears for his christening (who's gown???!!!) but this is your and your oh's decision.

Eli is a name in the bible. Seems like that would make it Catholic enough for anyone that cared about such things. I think it's a great name.

I agree

Eli is a name in the Bible so when you present the name you can say, "We wanted a name from the Bible so we decided to name him Eli, and his middle name will be Owen after his grandpa!" How can they argue that?? I think they will love it!

Elijah is always another great Biblical name, and you can call him Eli. i would personally go that route - Elijah Owen!
