After weeks of being on preterm labor, hospital bedrest, and walking around dilated 4...my twins decided to make their grand entrance on 11/11/11 at 35 weeks!!!
This may be a little long, so I apologize in advance.
After going into labor at 30 weeks, it was discovered that my twin girl suffered IUGR due to calcification of the placenta. And was a lot smaller than her twin brother. So, I was put on hospital bedrest for 2 weeks while being pumped full of magnesium sulfate (drug from heck!!!), for better monitoring, and in hopes of the babies growing a little more.
On the morning of November 10, I went to my pre-natal appointment, and it was decided that it was not wise for me to carry my twins past 36 weeks, due to the IUGR, so an induction was scheduled for November 17th, the following Thursday. I was thrilled that I had a set date, and my mind was at ease that I had a week to finish getting things in order...but my babies had other plans.
My husband works night shift and doesn't get home until 5:30 a.m., and on Friday mornings I stay up and wait for him and we watch our favorite show I dvr'ed from Thursday night. And the morning of November 11th was no exception. We had just cuddled up and hit play when I felt a POP that made me jump!!! My girl twin had been active all night so I figured she had just kicked really hard. So I shrugged it off...and then came the gush!!! I have to say, I never knew that much fluid could be in someone...and that was just one sac!!!
The hospital is an hour away, so my husband was frantic trying to get me there. Especially since my horrible contractions started 10 min into the trip, and I was certain the babies were going to be born right there in the car. But we made it to the hospital at 6:50 and I was already dilated 6. By this time I was begging for pain relief, and graciously accepted the epidural!!! But after receiving it, realized something seemed very wrong. For starters my pain and contractions were still there, and second, my mouth and throat sstarted to feel numb, and it was getting harder to breathe. I was having a horrible reaction to the epidural, because the woman who did it was in too big of a hurry because it was her shift change, that she did it wrong, and my epidural was numbing me in the wrong direction...so it had to be stopped immediately!!! My doctor checked me at this point and realized I was dilated 10...so no time for anything else...he moved me to the OR immediately for delivery in case one of the twins were to turn.
In the OR I was set up, and ultrasound was done to make sure both babies were still vertex, and I began pushing. Three pushes later at 8:03 a.m. baby Emmy was born weighing 3 lbs. 13 oz., but her brother was a little more difficult. His head was on his umbilical cord, and was being compressed with each contraction. When his heartbeat was completely lost, baby Elijah was delivered very frantically by forceps at 8:12 a.m. weighing 5 lbs. 3 oz.
Elijah, although purple when delivered, soon began screaming and was taken straight to the nursery. But because of Emmy's small size and lack of body fat due to IUGR she was taken to NICU. She suffered hypothermia and eating issues, so was placed in an isolette and had to have a feeding tube for 2 weeks. But I am happy to report that she is home now and doing well!!!
