I have posted about this problem before but it seems to be getting worse!!. My LO is 3 weeks old and eating what seems like all the time, he is eating 3-4 oz every 1 to a maximum of 2 and a half hours (including nights), surely this can't be right?. He just never seems satisfied for long, he sleeps then automatically wants food when he has woken even if it's a short time. He is a happy baby in between, he only cries when he wants food. I always check his bum and try to see if he is just tired before feeding him, it's only food that makes him happy again until the cycle starts again!!, he doesn't have any colic/wind issues. I'm seeing the HV on Tuesday I'm scared what he is going to weigh he seems to have expanded!!

It sounds like it could be a growth spurt. They have quite alot at first and as they have such small tummy's, they can't take that much at a time, so maybe he's waking up after a nap and still feeling hungry. When Joe had times like this, I just fed him when he wanted it, as we did (and still do) feed on demand.

Hope that helps x

My LO had a growth spurt at that age. Just let him have what he wants - the chances are it'll drop back to roughly what he was having before within a week or so. You can't overfeed them at that age.

Yes sounds like a growth spurt! if it does continue constantly have you thought about hungrier baby milk? or is your lo already on it? x

It could be a growth spurt but keep an eye out over the next two weeks (its also a sign of silent reflux) for wind problems, crying, arching back etc etc

Can he have the hungry baby formula at 3 weeks?i will try that if he can. On the advice of a HV i went up a size in teat yesterday (2) so hopefully that might make a difference!!.

I'm not sure about the silent reflux, he is generally very happy after a feed, he has arched his back but not regularly and it's only ever at night and he never cries after a feed, maybe half/one hour after and only last seconds. I'll ask the health visitor later shes coming round at 1.30. He does make strange sounds at night though which i think is down to wind.

Hi hun yes he can have the hungry baby formula, but i'd only change it if he persists with his feeding pattern as it could be a spurt! what noises is he making? x

Colic, reflux gets worse at night. Oliver has it and he can scream the house down between 8-10 and wants more food. We have started to use infacol and it is really helping. We give him his feed and then burp him as much as possible, keep him upright as long as possible also. He tends to drop of to sleep on my chest so he is up right.

Oh and also try tilting the cot/moses basket. I thought the midwife was being stupid when she said to do it... since we have been doing it it has helped him. We put 2 books under his moses basket, either on the floor when his in the living room with me in the day or on the stand at night. x

Thanks for your replies, the HV said it's normal and what a contented baby he looks and so aware for 3 weeks. He was weighed and he is now 10lb7!! monster!! he has put 2lb on in 2 weeks!. She just said carry on just as i am and he will get better soon!!.

I have raised his cot, thanks for that tip!!, the noises are like he is constantly trying to clear his throat, i don't think i wind him long enough at night, to busy thinking of sleep!!. Hopefully it will start getting better soon!

Ahhh fab weight gain! yes those noises sound like wind my lo still does it now and then as he gets older the wind will come up easier and he will settle better i find lying him down for a minute then trying again does the trick also changing winding positons. See how he goes with his feeding and if he seems still hungry after a feed consider hungry baby formula, at least you know its a option if you need it! tc xxx

my lo is also 3 weeks old, and he is a very hungry baby! He was 9lb 13 at birth, and 10lb 4oz when last weighed last week. He has been on 5oz for over a week now, and now hes starting to finish it really quick now, and seems to want more after so today ive uped his bottles to 6oz and im gunna see how he goes with that. He feeds every 3 hours roughly. Seems crazy that he can take that amount of milk, but i guess he is a big baby so hes gunna be more hungry. I asked my mw about the hungry baby stuff and she advised me not to use it until 4months as it can make them quite constipated x

my Sam went through this stage at 3weeks and I too was advised against hungry baby it basically is just thicker so makes them feel full up for longer so in my mind masks the intake of extra nutrition needed doesnt it? My hv said it changes to cottage cheese like consistency in their tummies - eekk.

Yes i have a ready made carton of SMA extra hungry infant milk from birth onwards its in 250ml cartons.

Jude guzzles 3 oz every 1-2 hours too! But he's a big boy so i can see why!
