Expressed milk went sour in two days

Over the span of two days I pumped a 5 oz bottle of milk (I miss the early days when I could pump that much in one sitting!). I would pump into the bottle, put it in the fridge, then pump a bit more into the bottle, then put it back in the fridge, etc. I probably took it out 3-4 times to pump into the bottle. When we warmed it to give it to DD it was sour! Is that from taking it out of the fridge repeatedly? I only had it out of the fridge for 5 min max each time. Should I pump into a fresh bottle each time and then combine the bottles into one so I don't keep taking the milk out of the fridge? I'm pissed about wasting so much milk!

Was it soapy or actually off? My breast milk with Sophie always went soapy, I forget why now but it's easily googled :)

I was always told not to put fresh milk in with cold though. I always chilled each little but then warmed and combined when I needed to use it.

I'm not sure, I don't think it was soapy, but I will google it to see what it's all about! I will stop pumping into the same bottle so I am not adding fresh milk to cold milk. This is not the first time I have done this, so I'm really hoping my freezer stash isn't sour!

My milk always tasted odd, metallic and sour, even 30minutes after pumping. Something to do with lipase?

Unfortunately I think this is something that just happens with some people's milk. I know that mine goes sour (not soapy) fairly quickly, so anything that is pumped either has to be frozen or fed the next day. It's worth keeping a little in the fridge over a few days for taste-testing so that you can pinpoint its refrigerated life-span. I've learnt from bitter (sour) experience that milk frozen after a couple of days sometimes can end up sour even if it tastes fine when it goes into the freezer (perhaps because of the time taken to thaw), so these days if I'm going to freeze it I try to get it in the freezer on the day it is pumped.

Some people's milk tastes really soapy the longer it's stored. Mine tastes like that when it has been frozen and defrosted and sometimes when it's been in the fridge a few days after expressing. Some babies don't seem to mind the taste but you can always scald the milk to reduce the lipase in it and it won't taste as soapy :)

The soapy thing was a bitter or sour taste with my milk with Sophie, it did taste faintly soapy. Scalding the milk helped. I never had had that with Thomas so it was weird!

It's not good food safety to put something warm into something refrigerated and cold! Definitely pump separately every time and combine when you're going to warm it up and use it.

I never pump warm into cold. It'll rise the temperature of the cold as if you sat the milk out on the counter, especially already having it out already to pump into the bottle, it's already getting warmer by the minute l. I pump into a new bottle. Chill it, then I'll condense them after it chills.

google "Lipase"

My milk would smell "soapy" after a short time and my daughter didn't seem to care. If that's the case with you, don't worry too much. It's not bad. Also you can scald it after you pump and that will help to keep it from smelling soapy. I would pump, scald, and then freeze. That seemed to help. But like I said, my daughter didn't mind the taste.
