I recently suffered a miscarriage. I was 12 weeks along and found out at the u/s that the baby had died at 8 weeks. I have a healthy 3 yr old at home and had no complications with her. After her delivery I participated in a random study which resulted in me testing postive for the Factor V Leiden Blood Disorder. I'm only heterozygous and have no history of clots therefore I was not put on any blood thinners for my second pregnancy. I've been reading alot about studies that indicate a direct relation between this mutation and miscarriages. My question is, are there any other women out there who have this mutation and have experienced a loss? If so, did your doctor recommend doing anything differently for your next pregnancy? It seems my doctor won't do anything until I've had recurrent miscarriages. I just want to do everything I can to avoid going through this experience again.

Hi Round 2. Couldn't go passed without answering. I don't have this myself, but my best friend has.
She suffered many (and I mean many) miscarriages. She never carried a baby full term, always miscarried around 6-8 weeks.
After a series of mc she was sent for investigation which found she had Factor V like you.

After the diagnosis, she went for IVF, which ended up in another miscarriage.

All the time, doctors have been saying that there is nothing they can do and would not prescribe blood thinners. They said that the study wasn't supported in UK and they believe it has little inpact on reacuring mc.

It was absolutely horrible time for my friend and I think she has given up now...

Sorry if I didn't put your mind at rest, but that's what happened.

Ya, I've heard some good stories.....and some not so good stories. It sounds like people with this condition just have to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. Thanks for the info.

Hey hun, if you do a search on this forum there are plenty of good news stories of women with this who have gone on to have happy and healthy pregnancies. I've never been diagnosed with this but I've had blood clots on my lungs whilst I was on the pill so I was started on daily blood thinning injections at week 6 and will be on them until 6 weeks after the birth. I don't know what the health care is like in Canada but I would ask the doctors if there is any clinical reason why you should not have the medication, if noone can give you a valid reason then I'd fight for the prescription or pay privately. Good luck x
