due to medical reasons I have to stop breastfeeding. I'm wondering the fastest, most effective way to dry up milk supply that won't be too painful.
today is day 2 that I'm not breastfeeding. I've been pumping or hand-expressing some milk when my breasts start to feel overly engorged - really hard and painful. they are staying engorged, but I've read just to express enough to relieve some of the pressure. should I be expressing at any particular interval? every few hours? or just as needed? should I wait a certain amount of time before I express again? we were combi-feeding before, so LO is accustomed to having bottles, but he also likes his booby time. he's been a little upset yesterday and today, and when he cries my boobs ache badly. any tips for this period of adjustment? for him and for me? it breaks my heart I can't breastfeed him anymore.
any suggestions or advice appreciated...

I can handle some pain, by the way, just don't want to end up with mastitis.

When I stopped, I gradually reduced, IBFed for 3 feeds, after a couple of days reduced it to two, then to one and then eventually stopped completely. I still had some milk for a while but it stopped eventually. Good luck xx

I can't BF at all now because of medications I'm taking. I knew it was an eventuality that I'd have to take the meds and stop breastfeeding. I decided I wanted to breastfeed him as much as possible before I had to stop instead of gradually reducing those feeds. Probably it makes things a little more difficult now, but it was worth it for him to have had as much of my milk as possible and for us to have had that time together.
Haven't expressed any milk at all since last night and my boobs hurt pretty badly, but I'm trying to ride it out. Just wondering how long it will take to get past the engorgement... To express or not to express? Is it faster to do it cold turkey?

Not great advice, but a nurse once told me to dehydrate myself for a few days. Again, not great advice!
