I have to have a procedure in a few weeks that requires me to fast from midnight until the procedure at 2 pm. And no liquids after 10 am. I will have general anesthesia so I won't be alert until probably 3-4 pm. I have no choice but to get this procedure done ASAP and my health depends on it. Will fasting all day affect my milk supply permanently? Is there anything I can do?

As i follow Ramadhan, I have been fasting every other day for the last week, and a day here and then before that, and I feel like my supply has been fine! (as the weather has been cooler i have been keeping more fasts).

I am fasting approx 18 plus hours at a time.

I make sure that the day i am not fasting i am drinking loads, and i have cut down on what i eat too, and find that my boy still seems to be ok, otherwise i would stop.

You do get a bit worried and anxious, but esp in your case where you dont have a choice, well you just have to hope for the best right?

Your supply should be fairly robust at 10 months old, if it does take a small hit, I would just nurse as much as possible for a few days after your procedure and it should bounce right back.

I have not fasted but I have made drastic changes to my diet because of LO's food allergies and I have lost a stone in a short amount of time because of it. Loads of people said it would effect my milk supply, it hasn't. I doupt it will make a difference and if it does it should go back to normal quickly when you eat normally again. Have you checked that any medication you will be given is okay for BFing?
