im stressing.. im out for day 2moro and although i have some cartons i will literally have to waste half each time i need to feed her as ive been intouch with sma and they have said if i transfered half to one of my own bottles i would have to throw it away after 2hrs.... really dont want to be messing about with flask and a big bottle of cold water and a jug just to cool a bottle down not only that my basket in pram is tiny.....

someone today suggested i fill the right amount of water in the bottles before i leave the house then when baby wakes for feed add the powder.... but then the rules on this are a no no.... its making life very hard and feel i cant leave the house

When my son was born I used thecartons and when we were going out for any length of time, I would put the chilled ready made milk into thebottles and carry them in a bottle bag. I now use powder formula which I make up in advance. I take the necessary number of bottles out with me in my changing bag, usually wrapped in a msuln or sometyhing to helkp keep it cool. I iuse them throughout the day even if they get to 'room temperature' and have never had any problems although I will throw them away when I get home if I haven't used them.

Each to there own I suppose, but it has never done my little one any harm! xx

I used to use cartons but gave up on them because of the cost and waste as you state here you hardly ever need a full one.
I have a small flask and make up every feed fresh. I mix it up about an hour before he needs it and this lets it cool to the right temp. If I ever forget to make it up in time it will just stand in a sink full of cold water or if you're out to eat they will usually get you a jug of water with ice which cools it super quick.
A small flask isn't too much extra to carry.

It is only sma that have such big cartons. the other brands are only 200ml cartons and therefore less wastage. Not sure if they are cheaper though!

If you use avent bottles you can buy an avent insulated bottle bag - make the bottle up in advance and chill in the fridge and the bag will keep it cool for several hours.

Sma do small cartons as well, 9oz ones. But if your LO only has 5oz etc then your still throwing a lot away. My LO has 7oz now so I just take the carton bottle things with the screw on tops cos its only 2oz waste so doesn't seem so bad. But when he was younger I used to take a flask of hot water and make up fresh about 30 mins before he needed it.if your only going on a short trip you could take a hot bottle and just let it cool while your out to give as milk lasts a couple of hours.

I use Cow and Gate which is 7oz. At first I'd end up throwing a few ounces away which is a waste but I just kinda chalked it up to what was necessary for a day out. The cartons are 62p each so I just reconciled it with myself by saying I'd have paid 62p for 4 or 5 oz etc so throwing some away wasn't the end of the world. I was so desperate to get out and about that I could deal with the waste, I'd rather that than being stressed and stuck in the house

making up with flask isnt really the best tho as say if you are at a park all day you will need a flask a bottle of water and a jug just to make a bottle up... plus you need a very level surface to get the correct measurement of water...

i emailed sma and they said that i could use a carton and divide it into 2 of my bottles and use one straight away and keep the other in cool bag with ice pack for 4 hrs, so this is the way im doing it for now.. and see how i go ... as its really only a weekend where i will probably need to be out as much

I used to do as you have just said and give half and put the other half in a sterile bottle in a cool bag and use within 4 hours. Another option would be to take out the amount of water you need (boiling) put it in bottles and thermal bags and add the formula as you need it. This is classed as a no no as the water isnt hot enough to kill all of the bacteria but if you feed it to LO straight away and then throw away then there wont be enough time for the bacteria to multiply. I used to find that the thermal bags kept the boiling water very hot for a good 4-6 hours anyway and I would often have to then cool it before feeding to LO but I would still throw away as soon as LO had finished.

I've got a small flask I take with boiling water and I take one of baby's bottles full of cold water. That way I can put in about 90mls of hot water in a bottle with the formula then top it up to just above 210 mls with the cold. That's what I do at home and it works for us when out too. I would probably use cartons too but my LO is on aptamil and they only come in 200mls and he drinks more than that.

if we are going out i fill 3 bottles with 3oz of cooled boiled water each and i have a small container to hold 3 feeds worth of power in seperate sections (bought from tesco for £1.50ish) when LO needs a feed i just add powder, shake and feed. suits us just fine and its so much easier when going out.

xx

I used to use the cartons but since using colief, it's so much easier to pre make them so I don't have to faff about adding colief half and hour before. So now I have one of these:

and put in one of those frozen ice block things in with the bottles and when Evie needs a bottle I use one of these to warm it up:

The bag just about fits 2 Dr Browns bottles in with the ice block.

When we are going out I just fill the bottles with cool boiled water & keep them in a cooler bag & add the powder as needed, my HV told me it was perfectly fine to do it this way!

when im going out i make a bottle up and pop it in the insalated bottle bag which keeps bottles warm for upto 4hours. if im gona be out 3-4hours id take a 2nd bottle only with a carton.
