Hey,

So today I got my request to work part time refused. I'm a teacher (secondary) and wanted to go back 3 days a week. I knew the HT would say no as he'd already said as much when I was pregnant. He's saying it would reduce quality of teaching and monitoring if classes were split BUT there are other part timers in school and they don't have split classes.

I can't go back full time and will have to resign if I don't win my appeal. Has anyone had experience of this/any tips?

I love my job and the school where I work but know that with my LO I won't be able to work FT and the hours I did before becoming a mummy! It's really stressing me out and I don't want it to ruin my maternity leave :nope:

Thanks in advance x

If there are others there part time then you maybe able to take it further. There is an emplotment law place you can phone for advise. but have no idea what the name is as not used it. hopefully someone can help

ACAS is the independent employment advice service (free!!!)

also, are you in a union? they will also be able to help!
good luck
xxx

Thanks! I've contacted my union who've advised what to put in the appeal letter and I get to plead my case in person! Fingers crossed.....

If others do it then there has to be a very good reason you can't as well!
Good Luck

I know quite a few secondary teachers and most have had to be in school at least 4 days but only doing 3 days hours (I.e. 2 full days 2 half)

Hi Ladies... I work in HR for a national retailer so thought i'd stick my ten pence worth in
Good luck with your appeal hearing, if the appeal is rejected dont panic as there are still options you can take such as taking your employer to tribunal for sex discrimination or ultimately if you felt forced to resign you could bring a constructive dismissal claim on the same grounds.
Ask for copies of the local educational authorities family friendly or flexible working policies, if you request these in writing they have to supply them at least 48 hours before your meeting.
Hopefully though they will agree either at or after your appeal hearing, just make sure they respond with either outcome, in writing within 7 days of your meeting.

hope this helps :)

My appeal has been turned down. I suggested a job share and they said it would lead to a fall in standards (I'm a teacher). I think this is rubbish, as all the job sharing teachers would say:winkwink:, but I really don't know what to do now.

Do I take it further? Are there grounds for this? How do I do it?

Hi, I've just joined this forum as I searched for 'appeals in job sharing' in google and found we are both in similar situations!!! Im a primary school teacher and have returned from maternity leave last september, on a part time basis, doing a job share. However this was only for a year! I have recently put a proposal in to my head to ask for 2 days a week next year, as a job share, which has been turned down. I have written to the governors and now have to organise an appeal meeting for a few weeks time, which my union representative will be accompanying me to.
Just thought I could share a few tips/ideas.....
Has your school got data/evidence that a job share has lead to a fall in standards?
Could you not be non-classed based I.e. PPA cover?
You can go to a tribunal.....most head teachers would not want to take it this far!
