Hi,

I'm new here, and my 26 year old daughter and her husband are expecting their first. She is about 20 weeks along with a little boy. Today, the ultrasound showed a good heartbeat, good size, and normal structure, from what they could tell...but also showed slight "abdominal ascites", or fluid in his abdomen.

They are seeing a high risk OB tomorrow morning, and she had LOTS of bloodwork done today. I know that the causes can range from viral, to urinary tract, to chromosomal...or it could resolve on its own. Her OB GYN seemed very concerned, and they are both beyond worried right now.

Has anyone experienced this? We'd never heard of this before.

Many thanks.

I have no personal experience of this. I have read other posts on here. It's hard not to worry. What they should do is regular checks to measure the fluid and see if it is increasing/decreasing. The blood tests should also be a good indicator of the problem, however they may need to consider an amnio for more definitive answers.

I really hope that all turns out well and it is something that can be resolved xx

Thanks so much for replying. They had an appointment with a perinatologist Friday morning, and he said that he had to strain to see what her usual OB GYN and the ultrasound technologist had noted. He told them that - although it could be the beginning of something - he really didn't think it was anything to be concerned about.

They will go back next Friday for a follow-up ultrasound, and should start getting blood test results as early as tomorrow. Though neither my daughter nor her husband will relax completely yet, they are both feeling much better about things, as no other areas of possible fluid were noted, and the brain, heart, and everything else looked normal, thank God; and the specialist was VERY thorough!

Again, thank you.

The specialist being thorough can mean all the difference. Glad to hear they are not as concerned as the first doctor. I hope it all works out.
